Molded in tan and black plastic. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. This is part of the famous Aurora WWI series of 1/48 scale aircraft. The series began in 1956 and Aurora added new kits into the early 1960s. Aurora Curtiss Hawk P-6E, 1/43, 116-98

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$48

The kit is dated 1958, but this is obviously a later issue as the Aurora logo does not say 'Famous Fighters' in the border and has no sunburst. The two side logos, however, do say 'Famous Fighters' on the logo. Due to the 100 price extension, it is most likely from 1960 or '61. Kit features movable rudder, elevators and wing ailerons, cockpit with pilot, seat, instrument panel, gun sight and feet stirrups, auxiliary gas tank and rotating prop and wheels. Molded in gloss dark green and clear. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including decals and instructions.

Airfix Fairey Rotodyne - Type Two Logo Issue, 1/72, 482

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$64

Early issue from the late 1950s. This was a well detailed kit for the time and builds up to a nice scale model. Features good cockpit detail, two pilots, opening rear cargo doors, separately molded control surfaces, full landing gear and more. Molded in silver and clear plastic. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. NOTE: two propeller blades are broken at the hub and are present so they can be repaired. The Rotodyne first flew in 1957. The purpose was to create the first true vertical take-off airliner that could operate from an area no larger than two tennis courts with a full load. The Rotodyne flew at up to 191 MPH with a range of 450 miles and a payload of 48 passengers or 5 tons of freight. Despite the excellent performance and a larger design in the works, the RAF never placed an order and BEA never placed a firm order. The project was discontinued in 1962.

The 'B' variant decals are for 'Lady in the Dark', a Pacific P-61 that flew an Oscar into the water for the final air-to-air victory of WWII. Kit features some interior detail, crew of three, rotating turret and elevating guns, independently molded elevator and wing flaps and a wide variety of underwing stores with four bombs and four drop tanks.

Airfix DH Comet 4B - Dan-Air Skyking Series, 1/144, 03170-7

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

$36

Very nicely detailed and molded kit from 1980. Features clear windows, full landing gear and passenger boarding stairs. Includes colorful Dan-Air London decals. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The initial Comet Is were in operation long before the 707, which gave the British an incredible post-war lead in the expanding civil aviation market. Just as the Comet was flying high and orders were pouring in from around the world, Comets began to mysteriously fall out of the sky. Everything from lighting to terrorist bombs were blamed. For months the root cause went undiscovered. Then, in a landmark investigation that is considered the first modern post-crash autopsy, it was discovered that the stresses around a small ADF window on the top of the fuselage were causing metal fatigue failure when the fuselage was pressurized. To confirm this, a Comet I was placed in a water tank and subjected to pressurization stresses. After some time, a dramatic failure occurred. Then parts of a crashed Comet were pulled from underwater proving once and for all that this was the root cause.

Airfix Hawker Hunter - Craftmaster Issue, 1/72, 1212-50

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

$22

This is a Type 3 logo kit from the 1960s with great box art. As you can see, two Hunters are at very high altitude and shooting at what appears to be a red jet-powered drone in Spanish Nationalist markings. This model has never been started. It is inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. Did you notice the rather strange looking drone on the box art? I often wondered about it's (possible) origins. Thanks to Dusty Rhodes, it is a Jindivik Australian target drone developed and built by GAF (Government Aircraft Factories) Australia. Development began in 1948. The piloted prototype, named Pika, flew in October of 1950, while the first unmanned Jindivik Mk.1 flew in August 1952. Only 14 Mk.1s were built and powered by a single Armstrong-Siddeley Adder ASA.1 turbojet. The Mk.2 began production in 1953 with the Bristol Siddeley Viper ASV.3 engine. A total of 190 Mk. 2 Jindiviks were built and were known as Mk.102 in Great Britain service. Mk.3s numbered 150 total production. They were called Mk.103a in UK service and Mk.203A by the Royal Australian Navy. In 1964/65, 42 Mk.3As were delivered to the US Navy and designated Mk.303A. They did not have USN serial numbers or standard US Navy target drone designation. By 1968 there were not longer being used in the USN and at least 14 were transferred to the UK. Mk.3A were followed by 126 Mk.3B and even a Mk.4A which was built only in the UK. Over 500 were built total and used into the early 2000s.
