SNAP 280mm Atomic Cannon With 2 Gun Transporters - (M65) - (ex Adams), 1/40, 53-398

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

$275

Very rare issue of this incredible kit. This Classic Cold-War model was originally designed and created by Adams. In the late 1950s, Adams closed down and sold Athearn the molds; Athearn then reissued the kits under the name SNAP. This was a short-lived arrangement. To boost sales, Athearn even approach Marusan in Japan where some were joint-issued as Marusan-SNAP kits. The molds were stored for quite some time then acquired by Life-Like much later. The Atomic Cannon was the Army's 20 mile range gun that could fire shells that contains small atomic bombs. The model is very highly detailed for that time and features transporters with movable wheels, towing yokes, fully detailed cab interiors & complete suspension, elevating and swiveling machine guns; the Atomic Cannon itself can be configured for firing or towing positions, the barrel elevates by real operating gears, the carriage rotates 360 degrees on platform and it actually fires 2 "Atomic" shells. Includes crew of 7. Inside, the model is factory new. It has never been started.. The parts that were factory sealed (in two bags) are still in those factory sealed bags; the parts that were never factory sealed have been inventoried complete. With decals and instructions. The decals are absolutely flat and in 'Excellent' condition with the typical yellowing as the only flaw. The instructions are in 'very good++' condition. The box is completely intact and 1005 present but is graded 'good-' because of moderate to significant wear as shown. The box sides are in the same condition as the top. The box tray is in the same condition - intact but 'good-' and includes the center cardboard divider. Please note that SNAP packed this model in a very large box- much larger than required. It makes for a great display of the incredible Adam's box artwork but does increase the shipping price. The amazing M65 280mm atomic cannon originally started life as a conventional artillery piece. Development first began in 1944 before the first atomic weapon had been tested. Far from being 'just another giant gun', the M65 was carefully designed to be a very mobile and versatile weapon. Liberal use of aluminum and other light-weight metals kept the weight of the gun and both transports to about 85 tons, which is not much more than the largest conventional gun of WWII. As a result, it is light enough to be carried by trucks and cross bridges without collapsing them. Size was also a major factor, as it can fit inside landing craft, turn street corners of an amazingly small radius and travel as fast at 35 mph. The two transporters are required to move the gun, with one in back and one in front. Power is supplied to each tractor by a 6 cylinder engine with 375 horsepower. Both transmissions are manually controlled. These 4x4 machines can push, pull or parallel one another - with the gun slung between them. The driver of the front tractor has control of the brakes and throttles of both units and can communicate to the rear driver by telephone. The gun can be traversed in a complete circle and has a range of up to 20 miles. A complete 280mm batter consisted of two guns, four 5-ton trucks towing ammunition trailers, another two trucks pulling a pair of generator trailers (each with a 30 KW generator to furnish power to the guns, a 5th truck carrying four shell carts and a 2 1/2 ton shop van. The total crew was about 100 men. Each gun could be set up to fire in less than 12 minutes and can fire a round every two minutes.

SNAP Combat Jeep And Trailer - With 3 GIs - (ex Revell), 1/40, 148-98

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

$110

Rare model from the original 1950s Revell "S" Issue molds. Very well detailed featuring rotating wheels, radio, jerry cans, detailed chassis and suspension, tilting windshield, driver/soldier and general figure, detachable trailer with rotating wheels, generator, cable reel, packs, tool box and more. Molded in olive drab plastic. Never started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. These molds must have had a very interesting history. The molds were cut in 1955 or 1956, either at Adams or by one of Revell's contractors. It appeared to be part of the Adams/Revell 1/40 line but Adams never issued the kit. The famous HO model train manufacturer Athearn purchased the Adams molds and ended up with the jeep. Ahtearn used the name SNAP for all plastic kit releases and slightly modified the molds by adding their name & logo to a part (or two) of each kit. Then UPC (Universal Power Master) either leased or purchased (probably the former) the Adams molds from SNAP in the 1960s. While most UPC kits say 'Made in Japan' the ex-Adams models do not and say 'Made in USA'. Things get even more interesting with the Life-Like issue. How Life-Like came across the molds is unfortunately unknown but it may have been in a bulk purchase of molds from Athearn since there were in the same general part of the country. This is simply conjecture, however.

SNAP USMC Winnie the Whale LVT A4 - With 75mm Cannon (Ex Adams), 1/40, 157-149

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

$54

1960s issue of this high-quality model from the original Adams Action Model molds. Features working bogies, flexible tracks, crew of two and four soldiers and more. Never started. The parts have been inventoried 100% complete and includes decals and instructions. NOTE: one small bogie wheel is a different shade of plastic; it is from an earlier issue of this same kit. These molds must have had a very interesting history. The molds were cut in the late 1950s, either at Adams or by one of Revell's contractors. It appeared to be part of the Adams/Revell 1/40 line but only Adams issued the kit. When Adams divested of the plastic kit business, most if not all of the molds were purchased by Athearn, the famous craftsman HO railroad kit manufacturer. Athearn called their new division SNAP Plastics with an address of Hillside, New Jersey. When SNAP ceased production, UPC issued this kit. While most UPC kits say 'Made in Japan' the ex-SNAP issues say 'Made in the USA' so perhaps they were molded by Athearn in New Jersey or at least a contractor. Things get even more interesting with the Life-Like issue. How Life-Like came across the molds is unfortunately unknown but it may have been in a bulk-purchase of molds from Athearn since there were in the same general part of the country. This is simply conjecture, however.

SNAP G.I. Soldiers - ex Revell GI Figure Set - (GI Soldiers), 1/40, 5149-100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

$95

Rare model from the original 1950s Revell "S" Issue molds. Very highly detailed and includes the following figures - general, radioman, 2 bazooka men, 2 mortar men with mortar, 2 machine gunners with tripod and machine gun, soldier with mine detector, soldier with flame thrower and 9 other infantrymen. Molded in olive drab plastic. Never started and inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions. These molds must have had a very interesting history. It is assumed that these were cut by Revell or much more likely one of their contractors in the mid-late 1950s; perhaps they used Adam's mold cutter. On the surface, there is no sign that they were to be parts of the joint Adams/Revell 1/40 line but Adams never issued the kit. However, Adams must have had the molds because when the famous HO model train manufacturer Athearn purchased the Adams molds, they ended up with the Soldiers. Ahtearn used the name SNAP for all plastic kit releases and slightly modified the molds by adding their name & logo to a part (or two) of each kit. This GI Soldier kit is made in the USA. Things get even more interesting with the Life-Like issue. How Life-Like came across the molds is unfortunately unknown but it may have been in a bulk purchase of molds from Athearn since there were in the same general part of the country. This is simply conjecture, however.

SNAP Hawk Missile Carrier - (ex Adams), 1/40, 159

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

$54

Rare early 1960s model from the original 1950s Adams molds. Well molded and detailed for that time featuring three Hawk Missiles, movable wheels and flexible tracks, elevating lift & supports, three figures and decals. Molded in gloss white and dark olive drab plastic. Never started and all parts and decals are still in the original factory-sealed bag. With instructions. These molds must have had a very interesting history. The molds were cut in 1955 or 1956, either at Adams or by one of Revell's contractors. It appeared to be part of the Adams/Revell 1/40 line but Revell never issued the kit. The famous HO model train manufacturer Athearn purchased the Adams molds. Ahtearn used the name SNAP for all plastic kit releases and slightly modified the molds by adding their name (SNAP) & logo to a part (or two) of each kit. This Hawk Missile Carrier kit is made in the USA but is actually a SNAP export to Canada; the importer was 'International Games of Canada Limited' in 'New Toronto Ontario.' They used a silver overprint to block out the kit number and pric extension and then added '#159 in Canada.' Then UPC (Universal Power Master) either leased or purchased (probably the former) the Adams molds from SNAP in the 1960s.

Sterling Curtiss P-6E Hawk - 16 inch Wingspan Flying Model Aircraft that Drops Bombs in Flight, A10

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$59

Excellent flying model from the early to mid 1960s that is designed for rubber free flight or control line. It includes an innovative system for dropping bombs in flight. Features stick and tissue construction, quality die-cut balsa parts, stripwood and spars, other wood stock as required, die-cut clear windshield, vac plastic details including radiator scoop, engine cowling, pilot bust, wheels pants, exhaust ports and more, finished wire landing gear struts, finished main and tail wheels, rubber motor, plastic prop, covering tissue and a big full color decal sheet. Includes excellent full size plans with detailed instructions. Never started. The small parts are still in the factory sealed bag; the parts that were never sealed have been inventoried complete. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling's offering to be 'deluxe' compared to other manufacturers.
