C&S ZMC-2 Metal Clad Blimp US Navy - 10 Inches Long - (ZMC2), 1/181

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair

$125

Rare 1930s model of this early US Navy Blimp. The ZMC-2 (Zeppelin Metal Clad 200,000 cubic foot capacity was the only successfully operated metal-skinned airship ever built. She was built at Naval Air Station Grosse Ile by The Aircraft Development Corporation of Detroit. ZMC-2 was operated from 1929 to 1941 by the U.S. Navy at Lakehurst, New Jersey base. She was scrapped in 1941. During her service ZMC-2 completed 752 flights for 2265 hours of flight time. This model was made by C&S Model Company, Trenton, New Jersey. They had quite a line of airships as I have seen their adds in very old Model Airplane News magazines. This kit has stick and tissue construction and features printwood, stock wood parts, stringers, blocks, covering tissue and full size plans. The model has not been started. All smaller parts are still wrapped in the factory tissue paper. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and paperwork included. The box displays much better than 'fair' but I have listed it as such because the end flaps are all missing one one side and other includes an end flap that is no longer connected. This kit is advertised on the short side panel as being 12 inches long; however, it measures 10 inches long on the plans.

Many molds eventually found their way to the USA either through ATP (who purchased the excess kit stock when Kader sold out) or IM.

There is no other assembly. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts & plans present. In the 1930s and 1940s, most modelers built the flying stick and tissue type models with rubber, co2 or gas power. But there were a small but measurable percent that built solid aircraft display models of great detail. This required great skill worthy of the shipbuilders of old, especially considering the limited offerings. Many manufacturers, such as Comet issued blocks of wood and a plan - the famous (or infamous) 'Make Wood Look Like Plane' kits.

Comet Patrol Torpedo Boat - PT-9 - 10 Inches Long - Solid Wood Model, J3

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Late 1930s or early 1945 issue. Almost everyone has heard of the Comet flying aircraft kits that boys and men built from stick and tissue, but few know that Comet had a line of ships also. Very nicely done wooden kit that measures 10 inches long when assembled. The hull had been very neatly factory machine cut in three dimensions. Also includes a sheet of printwood, balsa blocks and other wood parts for the superstructure, decals and full size plans. The plans are superior to most ship plans of the day with 4 hull sections, full size top and side drawings, illustrated instructions and a very large number of detail drawings. The decals are in 'good-' condition due to bug damage but could be easily scanned and restored as most of the transfers are fully intact. The plans are 'excellent.' The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts.

In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.
