Wood Model Kit, Box Condition: VG
$89
Beautiful kit from the 1950s made of quality hardwood - no balsa. The carving is done to the final shape. When complete it makes an impressive model and comes with a unique display stand. Features all carved and smooth wood parts, clear plastic canopy, full color decals, glue, wood filler, sandpaper and special display stand. Never started. Inventoried complete with all parts and plans. Before plastic kits were introduced, Strombecker was famous as the premier hardwood preshaped model manufacturer. In the 1940s and 1950s, Strombecker kits were flawlessly engineered but not inexpensive. All wooden parts are hardwood and are precarved to shape - you only had to glue, sand and paint to finish them.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: VG
$85
Rare late 1950s Cellovision deluxe issue with Ray Gaedke artwork, intact clear panel and trading card on the back. Includes a nice assortment of scale ground equipment and ground crew molded in yellow plastc. The kit features movable ailerons, wing flaps, rudder, pilot and copilot figures and a large, clear round-base stand. The aircraft is molded in white and clear. Although the box has some tape and general wear, it is easily in above average condition, which is rare. These boxes were fragile and easily damaged by normal handling. The box art a/c, VX777, was the aerodynamic prototype of the Mk. 2, and first flew on August 31, 1957.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: VG
$79
Rare box art version and in very nice condition with good color, four solid corners, no fading, tears, tags, tape or marks from either. Light, general even wear is the only flaw. Hardbox is dated 1960 and it appears that this design was only issued for a few years at the most. There are two variations of this rare box - one with the Parents' Magazine mark and one without. The one without shows up the least, and that is this example. Molded in gloss olive drab and black. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Exc
$195
Very rare original issue from 1959. The box states "So Realistic It Does Everything But Fly!" and it holds to that promise! The model is packed with action features; wings fold, dive brakes operate, arresting hook moves, canopy slides to show full cockpit, landing gear retracts and cowling comes off to show fully detailed engine. The most interesting item is the landing gear retract and extension mechanism. It works through a very complicated gear system that is operated from a central point. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. NOTE: two very fine push rods are neatly broken from the engine front, which is common. They are both included so you can repair them. The box displays better than "Excellent" but is graded as such as there is moderate shelf/storage wear on one long side and average wear on the the other three sides.
Resin Model Kit, Box Condition: Exc+
$68
Very rare limited production model of this IJN Auxiliary. Very well detailed resin waterline model that includes full illustrated instructions and even a painting guide. Never started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags. The Katsuriki had a very interesting and long career. She was originally completed in 1917 as minelayer, and the first ocean going ship of this type in the Japanese Navy. In WWI she served around the Japanese home islands. In the 1920s she was guardship off many of the the South Pacific Mandate Islands and began doing survey work of these new Japanese territories. With expansionist policies already in place, the need for a specialized survey ship was obvious and in 1935 she was converted to that role. The minelaying equipment was removed and surveying devices from the retired survey ship Manshu were installed. She took part in much intelligence gathering off the coast of China, then examined future targets for the Imperial Navy before WWII. Some areas she visited included the Spratly Islands, Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands, and surveyed and Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands. When World War II started, Katsuriki was re-designated a 'secret military vessel' on 20 July 1942, although her mission was still maritime surveying. She mapped the coasts of the Strait of Malacca, Burma, Singapore, the Dutch East Indies and north coast of New Guinea in support of Japanese troop landings and combat operations. On 21 September 1944 Katsukiki was torpedoed by USS Haddo southwest of Manila and sank. The Haddo spotted about 40 survivors and attempted to rescue, but the Japanese chose to drown themselves.
