Aurora British SE-5 Scout, 1/48, 103-69

Very rare version. Of all the Aurora SE-5, this one and the 'yellow' version turns up the least. The two are identical other than the background color for the rectangle behind the logo. The hardbox is dated 1956 with the original Jim Cox box art but with the 1957 oval 'Famous Fighters' logo. The original rectangle 'Northern Lights' logo has been neatly blotted out with a white rectangle of the same size. The fact that the price is still 69 cents (as the original issue) means this issue is early 1957 and predated the 'completely yellow' box art issue. Molded in gloss olive green and black. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. NOTE: the box has the large tear as shown just behind the engine exhaust.

First issue from 1956 with Northern Lights logo. This logo only appeared for one year. In 1957 it was replaced with the famous oval 'Famous Fighters' Sunburst logo. The artwork is by Jim Cox. Molded in glossy olive green and black. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. This kit was one of a very famous line of 1/48 scale WWI aircraft kits introduced by Aurora at this time. Due to the popularity, subjects were still being released into the 1960s.

This is is in investment-grade 'Near Mint-' condition. Very light wear is the only flaw. First issue from 1956 with Northern Lights logo, 69 cent price extension and great Jim Cox art. This 'NL' Rectangular logo was used for this one year only - in 1957 the oval 'Famous Fighters' Sunburst logo was launched. This kit is one of a very successful line of 1/48 WWI aircraft that Aurora launched in 1956. The line sold so well that new kits were added into the 1960s. Molded in the correct gloss olive drab green and black. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Thanks to Eugene DuBey, we know some history on the aircraft that Aurora modeled. The tail # on the kit rudder is 1354, the number of a Nie 16 that served with CAM de Dunquerke / St Pol sur Mer", 1916-17.

Aurora German Pfalz D-3 - (D-III), 1/48, 109-69

Dated 1957 with classic Jo Kotula artwork. This is the first issue of this kit; note 69 cent price extension and 'Famous Fighters' in the sunburst logo. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Please NOTE that the box displays slighter better than the 'good' rating, but it is graded as such because there is a stain on the right short side panel. This is part of the famous Aurora WWI series of 1/48 scale aircraft. The series began in 1956 and Aurora added new kits into the early 1960s. The line proved incredibly popular, so these kits were included in the 'mold upgrade' in the 1970s before Aurora went out of business.

Aurora Fokker D-VIII Flying Razor, 1/48, 135-79

Second issue dated 1959 with fantastic Jo Kotula artwork and Famous Fighters Sunburst logo. A nice kit of the dreaded 'Flying Razor' of WWI. Molded in a beautiful metallic high-gloss green and black plastics. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Please note that this box exists in two versions; one with the PM seal at the extreme lower right and one with it an inch or so to the left. The Fokker D-VIII was a great performer but it came too late to change the tide of the air war. It started life as the Fokker E.V, one of the first warplanes to have the cantilever wing. This advancement was the result of a long-term Fokker project to perfect this technology. In addition to greatly reducing drag, a properly built cantilever wing is very light and strong. This wing was first used on prototype V17 and then on V28 which took part in the Second Fight Competition (July 6-14 1918) where the most experienced German front line pilots chose new fighters for late war service. V28 was chosen for it's excellent flying properties and 200 of the production aircraft, known as the Fokker E.V, were ordered. Over 289 aircraft were delivery. The E.V began front line service on August 5, 1918; Lt. Emil Rolff of Jasta 6 reported an aerial victory on August 17. However, the day before, an E.V suffered catastrophic wing failure. Two days later, the same failure cost Lt. Rolff his life. All E.Vs were immediately grounded. A detailed investigation showed that there were fatal defects in the wing assembly caused by slack manufacturing processes. Although it was not his fault, Fokker took this opportunity to re-design and strengthen the wing. Existing E.V aircraft received new wings and newly built aircraft were designated D.VIII. Modified aircraft made it back to the front in November, too late for service. However, the aircraft saw active service after that war with the Freikorps air units, the Polish Air Force against Russia, the Dutch Air Force and an unspecified number went to France and the USA.

Very rare. Factory Test shots were done in colorless plastic to confirm that new molds were ready for production. They seldom left the factory; most were destroyed but some leaked out, usually through employees. This model came from a long time collector and archiver/historian who sold it in the late 1990s; I obtained it from him. The first issue box, dated 1959 with 98 cent price extension has 'Famous Fighters' around the early oval sunburst logo, Parents' Magazine seal and Jo Kotula boxart. Since two different molds were used for the Aurora WWI kits, the main aircraft parts are in clear plastic and the black parts are made from black plastic. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions.

Aurora DeHavilland DH-4 - (DH4), 1/48, 112-98

First issue dated 1957 with classic Jo Kotula artwork. Part of the famous WWI 1/48 scale series of aircraft that Aurora issued starting in 1956. Molded in the correct gloss olive drab and black plastic, including figures and the ground base with chocks. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. Besides it's distinguished career in WWI, the DH-4 saw extensive post war service in numerable ways. One of the most interesting was as a United States Post Office air mail service aircraft. The aircraft's likeness even graced an airmail stamp of the time. In about 1925, the Post Office decided to upgrade. The prototype was the Douglas M-1 and an improved version, the M-2, became the next mail carrier. The M-2 is also an Aurora kit in the same scale.

First issue dated 1957 with classic Jo Kotula artwork. Molded in deep gloss burgundy and black plastic. Never started and inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present. This aircraft has a fascinating history. From the internet: The United States Post Office had been running the air mail service since 1918 mainly using variants of the de Havilland DH.4 biplane. In 1925, it decided to modernize and placed an order with Douglas for a replacement aircraft based on the Douglas O-2 observation biplane. The company modified an O-2 by covering over the forward cockpit to make a mail compartment and moving the pilot into what had been the observer's cockpit. The aircraft was designated the DAM-1 (Douglas Air-Mail-One) but this was soon shortened to M-1. The M-1 used the same Liberty engine as the DH.4, which was available in large numbers. Small modifications were made to the exhaust system to keep fumes away from the pilot and the design was considered a success, but was not ordered into production. When the Contract Air Mail (CAM) routes were introduced, the newly formed Western Air Express Company (later Western Airlines) ordered six mailplanes with the designation M-2. The main change from the M-1 was that the tunnel radiator was replaced with a frontal type. It also had the provision to carry a passenger instead of mail in the front cockpit. Just before Western Air Express introduced the aircraft into service (in April 1926 from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City), the Post Office ordered 50 aircraft designated M-3 for its major route network. The M-3 had only detailed differences from the M-2.

Aurora Douglas M2 Mailplane - (M-2), 1/48, 111-98

First issue dated 1957 and in amazing 'near mint-' investment-grade condition. The box has like-new color and gloss, four solid corners with no repairs, no tags or tape or marks from either, no fading, no missing litho and no tears. It does have very light wear and a light crease at the lower left corner as shown. This classic Jo Kotula artwork kit is molded in deep gloss burgundy and black. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present. Decals are in amazing 'near mint' and flat with slight yellowing as the only flaw. The instructions are 'excellent++' and have little yellowing. This is the very first issue as it has the instructions missing the clear windshield part and NO small additional instruction sheet showing it. This aircraft has a fascinating history. First issue dated 1963 and a perfect builder. The box has 6 tape tears (four on the sides) but the kit inside has never been a started. The actual aircraft has been inventoried complete but NOTE: missing ground base. Includes decals and instructions and two crew figures, although the plastic color of the crew is slightly different from the other parts. The crew are from a later issue of this same kit.

This logo was only used for that year and was quickly replaced in 1957 with the well-known 'sunburst' oval with 'Famous Fighters' written in the border. Molded in the correct metallic deep burgundy and black plastic. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present. James Cox, who did much of the early artwork for Aurora, created a timeless classic for this issue - this artwork was used well into the 1960s and possibly up till the final 'Big A' logo boxes before Aurora's demise. Aurora retained the original, classic Jim Cox artwork from the '56 issue but painted out the rectangular logo, replacing it with the new one. For some reason, this and the second issue turn up far less than the others. Molded in a stunning, high-gloss burgundy and black plastic. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present. Please note that the second issue looks much like this but there was a 69 cent price circle at the lower right and no PM seal.
