Strombecker Northrop P-61 Black Widow, C33

Wood and Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+++

Sold

Before plastic kits were introduced, Strombecker was famous as the premier hardwood preshaped model manufacturer. In the 1940s and 1950s, Strombecker kits were flawlessly engineered but not inexpensive. All wooden parts are hardwood and are precarved to shape - usually only a quick sanding would finish them. This kit is hardwood with many plastic injection molded parts, so it was produced in the transition from wood to plastic. The P-61 is one of the rarest of the WWII Strombeckers. The model includes plastic detail parts, decals, glue and sandpaper. The carving is done to the final shape - which makes for some impressive parts for a Black Widow. When complete it makes an impressive desk top display model with an 11 inch wingspan. Never started. 100% complete with all parts, decals and detailed plans/instructions.

The idea of a rigid airship using a monocoque metal skin had been tried in Germany in 1897 with the 'Schwarz'. In 1929 the ADC tried a more successful experiment with the ZMC-2 - the MC stood for 'Metal Clad'. A supporting structure of twelve ring frames mounted on twenty-four longitudinal lattice beams. This structure was entirely covered with duralumin and pure aluminum foil sandwich skinning amounting to no more than a few hundredths of a millimeter in thickness. This metal envelope was gas tight and was directly filled with helium. Two Wright Whirlwind engines of 220hp were used. The ZMC-2 first flew on August 19, 1929. She had a maximum speed of 48 mph and entered the US Navy as a training vessel. It was scrapped in 1942 after 12 years of trouble-free service.

Berkeley is a very famous manufacturer of flying model kits from the Golden Age of flying aviation, about 1932-1954. Most all Berkeley kits contain a high degree of prefabrication to speed up assembly. Founded in 1933 by William Effinger, the company was quite progressive in producing quality kits - it was likely the Berkeley 'Buccaneer' was the first gas powered model in kit form. In the later 1930s, Effinger acquired the services of a very talented Henry Struck. Struck went on to design numerous award-winning kits under the Berkeley name. Berkeley weathered the post WWII recession and emerged as a major kit producer in the late 1940 and 1950s. These were great years for Berkeley and they produced some incredible and large kits. The company went bankrupt in about 1960 however. Fox engines (Duke Fox) bought the company and released the kits alongside his own FOX models and engines. This arrangement did not last, and in the early 1960s the Berkeley name disappeared from hobby shop shelves.
