Scale Flight Comet's Ryan Cabin - 16 inch Wingspan Dime Scale Flying Airplane, Dime

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: NM

Sold

Scale Flight Model Company in Bloomington, Indiana, USA was dedicated to releasing authentic reproductions of the finest "Dime Scale" flying model (stick and tissue) kits from the 1930s/40s. Dime Scale models used to sell for a dime in the 1930's, hence the name. They are actually box scale, but as a general guideline, they usually had a wingspan of 16 inches and have simple and light construction. "Dime Scale" models are now a class flown in some competitions. Kit consists of contest grade printwood, contest quality strip wood, machine cut balsa propeller, the best Japanese tissue, wooden wheels, competition bushed nose plug, brass thrust washers, prop shaft, prop freewheeler, FAI rubber strip motor and a copy of a genuine dime scale plan that was used in the 1930s-1940s. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions.

Comet Aeronca Seaplane (with floats) - 25 inch Wingspan Balsa Wood Flying Model Kit, E25

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG-

Sold

Much older (1930s or 40s) Comet issue. Rubber powered stick and tissue model featuring float for operation ROW (Rise Off Water). This kit has never been started. It is either still in the internally sealed factory bag or has been inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. These aircraft were common in the 1930s when the sport of free-flight model airplanes reached it's zenith. It was not uncommon for these models to fly for 45 minutes or more on rubber power alone - many flew out of site, and it became common practice to write your name, address and phone number on the covering tissue. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Aurora Silver Knight of Augsburg 1560 'Valiant Warriors' - Crown Issue, 1/8, K1-98

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

These were the first Aurora Knights ever issued and Aurora gave them the kit numbers K1-98, K2-98 and K3-98. These were the very first Aurora figure kits. The knights sold well, and Aurora bought the three 'Knight' molds from Crown Plastics within the year. This is the very first Aurora Knight kit ever issued - K1-98. Please note the early Aurora 'Northern Lights' logo has the correct 'Crown Line' logo inside it. Inside, the plastic parts are mint. The kit has never been started. Mair continued with the same logo and 1/48 scale and went on to make one of the rarest and valuable 1/48 scale wooden kits ever - the Maircraft DC-3. Guillows Spitfire - 16 inch Wingspan Rubber Powered Balsa Wood Kit, 504

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

One of a very popular 16.5 inch wingspan series of World War 2 kits. Roughly 1970s scale stick and tissue rubber powered flying model. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.
