The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911) and Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called "The Aviation Craze" that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around this time. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - they were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream – to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business – Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviation's Great Recruiter – Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Renwal CV-38 USS Shangri-La Aircraft Carrier with Regulus I Missiles (Essex Class Angled Deck), 1/500, S600-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Sold

NOTE: Builder kit only - please read carefully. Rare. Very nicely designed and molded Renwal kit. This model is considered the finest injection molded kit of the angled deck Essex class aircraft carrier. Features one piece hull with display stand, rudder, propellers and shaft alleys, very detailed separately molded hull sides, full primary and secondary AA guns with directors, highly detailed island structure with radars, direction finders, signal lights and more, separately molded life rafts and whip antennas, rotating cranes, Grumman F9F-8 Cougars (5), folded wing Cougars (7), A-3D Skywarrior (2), helicopter, three Regulus missiles with two trailers and one launcher, full decals including draft markings and more. NOTE: this kit has been started. Steps one and two are done. This means that the bare hull is done - bulkheads have been glued into place, along with the anti-aircraft platforms, AA guns and two side elevators. The flight deck has not been glued to the hull, but four small directors have been glued to the flight deck. This is the only assembly. Quality of assembly is 'very good'. The elevators go up and down as they should and all parts are properly glued. The only issue with the assembly is the occasional use of just a little bit too much glue around the AA guns; not excessive, but it is evident. NOTE: missing one single barrel AA gun. Inventoried complete with all other parts, decals, flags and instructions. NOTE: some parts have damage as follows: many AA gun barrels are broken off and missing. They will need to be replaced with stock cylinder plastic. One prop blade is broken but present. One helicopter blade is broken off and missing. The tails for 5 Cougars (wings not folded) are broken off and missing. At least one elevator is broken off one A3D.

It is either still in the internally sealed factory bag or has been inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Frog is considered the father of injection molded model kits. The Lines Brothers opened Frog in 1932, capitalizing on the fever caused by Lindberg's solo transatlantic flight. Almost overnight the western populations became 'Air-Minded', and anything aviation was in high demand. Frog created a quality line of stick and tissue rubber powered aircraft and gliders as well as innovative ready-to-fly rubber powered aircraft that required no assembly. The box even contained a built-in rubber motor winder and fuselage holder. Model airplane flight competitions were popular in Great Britain, and one category was 'Rise Off the Ground', or ROG. By changing this to 'Flies Right Off the Ground', the FROG name was born. In 1936 Frog created a line of injection molded plastic models, the first such kit line in the world (Hawk sold a line of injection molded aircraft models in 1934 but they were factory assembled and painted). Named 'Penguin' after the bird that does not fly, the kits were innovative beyond the means of production. At a time when models were simply built by wingspan, the Penguin line was a constant 1/72 scale. Furthermore, a large 1/72 Short S.30 Empire class flying boat contained a full interior and lights! A line of accessories such as AA guns, tractors, hanger, ambulance, sound locator, searchlights and lighting kits were quickly added to the line. WWII caused a pause in production. After the war the box color changed from silver to green, and Penguin kits were also marketed in the USA. Production ended in 1950. Frog quickly expanded and released the Red, Orange, Black, Green, Gold Token, Spin and Comet series as well as Trail Blazers and several others. It is noteworthy that while most manufacturers in the 1940s/50 were making toy-like models, Frog attempted to make very realistic models. For example, 'detailing' kits with excessively large rivets was once very popular. Frog ignored this trend and continued to mold aircraft with fine panel lines and no rivets. As a result, Frog kits can be built into very realistic replicas. Production ended in the late 1970s, but Frog molds are still in use around the world.
