ODK Bf-110 - (Me-110), 1/67, 4

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

$52

ODK was the logo used by Odaka Sangyo. Odaka began plastic model kit production in early 1960, but all production stopped by 1965. This early issue has very high gloss box art and the 'postage stamp' artwork frame. The Bf-110 was probably their 4th kit. The box top says "Sohatsu Series" and thanks to my friend Mr. Jiro Kawashima in Japan, this means "Dual Engine" series ('so' = dual and 'hatsu = engine') On the side, the first four kits are listed with the Bf-110 as #4. (The instructions say 'No.5' but Burn's guide agrees with the box top side that it is #4.) It is molded in a very dark green, black and clear like so many other ODK kits. Never started. The parts have been inventoried 100% complete and includes decals and instructions. The decals are noteworthy as they have giant all-red vertical stabilizer swastikas and fuselage markings for AE+JK.

ODK Nakajima J1N1 Irving Getsuko, 1/71, 1

Contest Craft So-Lo Class B Stunt Plane - 22 Inch Wingspan Flying Aircraft

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$95

Very rare model from 1949. Highly prefabricated and robust control line model from the "Contest Craft Company." Features high quality balsa parts that are all either factory cut to shape or die-cut, covering material, landing gear wire, full size plans and detailed instructions. This kit has been inventoried complete but NOTE: it has minor and 'professional' quality assembly. The center core of the fuselage (a flat assembly) is built. There is no other assembly. Thanks to Dusty Rhodes, we now know a little bit more about Contest Craft. Mr. Richard W. Backora registered the company name in 1949 and it appears that this model was one of his designs. Mr. Backora was born in New York, NY in 1924. He was a WWII Navy veteran and also served in the US Marine Corps. He was an Armament Equipment Branch Head for the Naval Air Systems Command and retired after 28 years of government service. He then spent 15 years in the private sector as a staff and project engineer with Thiebolt Aircraft, Republic Aviation and Melpar, Inc. Mr. Backora was very active in his local community in Church and secular organizations. He was also a member of the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) and the Lewes R/C Club. Although no address is given for the manufacturer, the instructions state that you should ask your hobby dealer for other Contest Craft Company kits.

AGA Sokol Polish Navy (U-Class) Submarine, 1/400, 1403

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed VG

$14

Still factory sealed, but the seal has drawn the box top concave. Solol and her sister Dzik were the first submarines delivered to the Polish Navy once WWII began. By Feburary of 1941 Sokol was patrolling the Bay of Biscay. The Dzik was delivered on October 11, 1942 and entered service very quickly. Both of these ships achieved significant success in the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas, where they destroyed several enemy ships. Both subs outlasted the war and were returned to England. The Sokol was broken up in 1949 and the Dzik was lent to the Danish Navy in 1946. Her active service ended in 1957 and she was broken up in 1958. Very nicely molded and detailed but certainly not a 'state of the art' Tamiya style kit. Features full hull with propellers and rudder, display stand, color paint guide for two different paint schemes on the back of the box with rigging diagram and full decals for either scheme with flags.

In some cases, the specific car and owner is on the box. The model includes colored injection molded parts, clear parts, detailed chassis and complete interior. Ideal for slot car conversion. Revell 1915 Fiat Tourer - Highway Pioneers, 1/32, H55-89

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$42

1953 early issue molded in red acetate plastic. This kit has never been started. All parts are still sealed in the factory 'crinkle' bag with instructions. This is from the issues produced with Gowland & Gowland as it carrier their 'balloon' logo on the side. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys.
