Airfix Grumman J4F Gosling/Widgeon - Bagged, 1/72, 1421

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Monogram B-24 Liberator Speedee-Bilt, 1/60, H4-495

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

Dated 1954. This is the finest H4 Liberator that I have seen. The box has like-new color and gloss, four solid corners and only light general wear. The inside is like new also. Classic early multi-media kit with a fantastic internal box presentation. Before injection molded plastic kits were common, Monogram issued the famous 'Speede-Bilt' and 'Super Kits' which featured injection molded details and precarved wooden parts. Of these, the Speede-Bilt B-24 and B-17 were the finest. These kits are rare today due to their relatively high price of $4.95. This example is inventoried 100% complete with all parts, glue, dope, decals, sand paper, plans and instruction book. The kit has never been started. Still has all internal packing as shown. Amazingly, the celluloid plastic parts range from no warping to very slight warping. This is very rare, as that type of plastic was unstable and warp easily over time. Instructions, decals and plans are 'near mint' also, as are the parts sheet. No parts have been punched out. This kit must be shipped insured.

Airfix Handley Page Hampden B. Mk. I - 49 Squadron RAF, 1/72, 491

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

Type three logo issue from the 1960s. Features movable control surfaces, opened or closed bomb bay with bombs, full crew and optional position undercarriage. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. Hampdens, along with Whitley and Wellingtons, formed the RAF's Heavy Bomber force at the outbreak of WWII. Dusty Rhodes provided more information on the box art aircraft - Hampden AE240 took off from RAF Scampton at 1443 hours on the 12th February 1942, detailed to attack the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in the English Channel. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take off and the aircraft and crew disappeared without trace. The Squadron lost 4 aircraft on this mission.

Best 1935 Gilmore Special Indianapolis 500 Winner, 1/30, 535-79

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

Very rare kit for the advanced collector. In the early 1950s Best Hobby Kits (Best Plastic Corporation of Brooklyn, NY) entered the infant USA plastic model kit market with a series of Indianapolis 500 winners. Six kits were issued - the 1920 Monroe Special, 1922 Murphy Special, 1931 Miller Special, 1935 Gilmore Special, 1940 Maserati Racer and 1953 Fuel Injection Special. The kits were priced correctly and featured 'Super Detailed' parts (for the time). It is unknown why the line failed to sell - it may have been distribution. Best was certainly not a large player in the business. The kit features real rubber Firestone racing tires, decals and some interior detail. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions.

Pyro Flying Cloud Clipper Ship, B370-75

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

From 1966 and one of a series of famous Pyro small scale sailing ships. They were very popular and had excellent detail for that time. This kit measures almost 7 inches long when assembled and features full hull, molded wood plank detail above the waterline and on deck, very fine copper plating below the waterline, well detailed deck moldings with several separate fittings, molded ratlines, separate masts, billowing sails and display stand. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions. Pyro did an very nice job of capturing the lines of this famous clipper, which was one of fifty designed and built by Donald McKay. The Flying Cloud set the record for the voyage from New York to San Francisco on her maiden voyage. The time, 89 days and 21 hours was only beat when she bettered this record by 7 hours. She was 235 feet long with a beam of 40 feet and 8 inches. There were over a million feet of oak in her hull. The Flying Cloud ended her days as a lumber boat between St. John, Newfoundland and London. In June of 1875 she was wrecked off the New Brunswick coast. It has been said that the ear of the clipper ship came to a close when they burned her hulk for the scrap metal that was inside.

Rare waterline kit featuring superb resin cast hull (with greater detail than is possible with injection molding), resin detail parts (larger parts), a great many precision metal cast smaller detail parts, metal stock and full instructions. There is an excellent and extensive factory sealed decal sheet for these ships: Exeter D89 / D90 Southampton / D91 Nottingham / D92 Liverpool / D86 Birmingham / D108 Cardiff / D87 Newcastle / D88 Glasgow. This is a surprise (as they are not from this class!), but from this sheet you can make the hull numbers for the ships listed in the kit title. That may have been the intention at Pit Road.
