After 17 days he was convinced that this was not the route to the Indies. The following year, he sailed for the English with the same mission. Hudson sailed more northerly this time and discovered the great bay which now bears his name. His ship was frozen for the winter. When the spring thaw came, he tried to continue north but his crew mutinied and set him adrift in a small boat with his son and some crew members who did not join the mutiny. They disappeared forever among the ice flows of the Arctic. No trace was ever found. The crew returned to England to face trial.

On November 15, 1577, Sir Francis Drake sailed from Plymouth, England in the 'Golden Hind,' accompanied by four smaller vessels. At the time, the great nations of Europe were squabbling for a share of the treasures to be found in the New World. Because Drake intended to visit land already claimed by Spain and Portugal, he was reported to be on a long voyage of discovery. The voyage lasted almost three years and his small ship completely circled the globe before returning to England. When she returned, the 'Golden Hind' was loaded with ingot and jewels plundered from the rich Spanish settlements along the West coast of South America.
