Lindberg Boeing Trainer PT-17 Kaydet - (ex-Varney / ex-O-Lin), 1/48, 508-98

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

Rare 1950s hardbox issue with colorful Ray Gaedke boxart. This kit has a long and interesting history. These molds were originally created by Varney in the 1940s - please see the article on this website about this. The Varney PT-17 was one of the first injection molded plastic aircraft kits produced in the USA. O-Lin, of which Paul Lindberg was one-half of, purchased the Varney molds and released the kit after slight mold modifications. When O-Lin became Lindberg, the kit was released once - this kit - with the minimally modified molds. After this release, the molds were modified more significantly. Molded in very bright glossy yellow, black and clear. The model has not been started. It is complete with all parts, decals and instructions. The parts are the correct early issue.

Strombecker Lockheed XFV-1 VTO Vertical Take-Off Fighter, 1/72, C50-89

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Strombecker was famous as the premier hardwood preshaped model manufacturer before plastic kits were introduced. In the 1940s and 1950s, Strombecker kits were flawlessly engineered but not inexpensive. All wooden parts are hardwood and are precarved to shape - usually only a quick sanding would finish them. This kit is hardwood with many plastic injection molded parts, so it was produced in the transition from wood to plastic. The prop hubs, spinner, tip tanks and fuselage are wood, while the wings, props, scoop and tank fins are red plastic while the canopy is injection molded in clear. Full color decals are furnished as well as a 'Join the Strombecker Model-Makers Club' brochure. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions.

Vacuform Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed

Aurora Wheeler Cruiser Sports Fishing Yacht, 1/43, 444-650

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Very rare kit with great box art by Mort Kunstler. This is the first issue dated 1967; I am not aware of a second issue. Aurora did a beautiful job on this model, but it simply did not sell and was discontinued very shortly. The high price of $5 USD and the esoteric subject matter were likely to blame. This is a large-scale model with excellent detail and molded in white, medium wood tan, medium blue and chrome plate. Features a one piece hull, propeller and rudder detail, one piece main deck, venetian blinds for the larger interior windows, extensive deck fittings which are all separately molded, all hand rails (in chrome), dinghy with interior and oars, spray shields, display stand, 5 figures and more. The kit has never been started. The blue part are still in the factory sealed bag. All other parts have been inventoried 100% complete. Includes instructions and decals. The chrome plating in in 'as new' condition. Please note that the box has light wear, age foxing and one split corner at the lower right which has been duct taped.

Wood and Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: NM

Sold

From 1954. Very rare plastic and precarved wood kit. Before there were injection molded plastic kits, model builders worked in wood or metal. Inside, the kit is as it left the factory with the small plastic parts still in the factory sealed 'krinkle' bag, unpunched factory painted balsa parts, finished balsa fuselage and wings, red acetate stand, clear windshield, sandpaper, instructions and decals. The kit has never been started. The plastic parts were factory sealed and are still in the sealed bags. The other parts were not factory sealed and have been inventoried complete including decals and instructions.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Last issue from the late 1970s with the final Frog logo. Very cleanly molded kit with excellent fine panel detail and no unrealistic rivets. Includes decals for USSR or Czech Air Force (Red and White National Markings). The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. Frog is considered the father of injection molded model kits. The Lines Brothers opened Frog in 1932, capitalizing on the fever caused by Lindberg's solo transatlantic flight. Almost overnight the western populations became 'Air-Minded', and anything aviation was in high demand. Frog created a quality line of stick and tissue rubber powered aircraft and gliders as well as innovative ready-to-fly rubber powered aircraft that required no assembly. The box even contained a built-in rubber motor winder and fuselage holder. Model airplane flight competitions were popular in Great Britain, and one category was 'Rise Off the Ground', or ROG. By changing this to 'Flies Right Off the Ground', the FROG name was born. In 1936 Frog created a line of injection molded plastic models, the first such kit line in the world (Hawk sold a line of injection molded aircraft models in 1934 but they were factory assembled and painted). Named 'Penguin' after the bird that does not fly, the kits were innovative beyond the means of production. At a time when models were simply built by wingspan, the Penguin line was a constant 1/72 scale. Furthermore, a large 1/72 Short S.30 Empire class flying boat contained a full interior and lights! A line of accessories such as AA guns, tractors, hanger, ambulance, sound locator, searchlights and lighting kits were quickly added to the line. WWII caused a pause in production. After the war the box color changed from silver to green, and Penguin kits were also marketed in the USA. Production ended in 1950. Frog quickly expanded and released the Red, Blue, Orange, Black, Green, Gold Token, Spin and Comet series as well as Trail Blazers and several others. It is noteworthy that while most manufacturers in the 1940s/50 were making toy-like models, Frog attempted to make very realistic models. For example, 'detailing' kits with excessively large rivets was once very popular. Frog ignored this trend and continued to mold aircraft with fine panel lines and no rivets. As a result, Frog kits can be built into very realistic replicas. Production ended in the late 1970s, but Frog molds are still in use around the world.

Monogram Curtiss P-36A - White Box Issue, 1/72, 6790

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Good+

Sold

Still factory sealed. Dated 1979. Very finely molded and detailed kit with traditional high Monogram quality. The Hawk P-36A has the dubious distinction of fighting on both sides and for more countries than any other plane in history during the opening years of WWII. This Hawk, one in a long progression of famous fighter aircraft, was the winner of a 1935 competition. The USAA Corps received the first aircraft in April of 1938 and the French ordered 100 aircraft in May of the same year. French Hawks shot down just over 30 German planes during the battle for France. The Germans captured the aircraft and sold them to Finland. Others were captured when the Germans overran Norway. In all over 800 Hawks were produced and served in China, Netherlands East Indies, Portugal, Great Britain, Thailand, Argentina and Peru. Although an excellent fighter in 1935, the Hawk was outclassed by the time the war started but when flown properly still gave a good account of itself.
