From the 1960s. Large scale stick-and-tissue model that is well detailed. Can be flown rubber free flight, gas free flight, or converted to electric RC using modern light-weight servos and receivers. Well detailed with scale plastic wheels, plastic propeller, vacuform spinner, cowl and exhaust stacks, full color decals, covering tissue, die cut balsa parts, rubber motor, plywood firewall and excellent full size plans. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.

The decal sheet has 'Castro Oil,' 'Havana Banana,' 'Skyjack Limousine,' 'Beard of Paradise Airport Limousine,' and more. Car can be built one of three way and features Grand Sport dual quad 425 Nailhead engine, optional Lathem blower version, choice of three different rims, full stock or custom interior, detailed engine compartment and opening hood, custom front and rear end treatments and more. The kit has never been started. The parts that were factory sealed are still in the sealed bags. The chrome and clear were not factory sealed have been inventoried complete including decals and instructions.

Very nicely detailed large 1/8 scale model. Features nine cylinders, crankcase, carburetor with sliding valve, accessory drive gears, oil pump, magneto, full wiring and display stand. The kit has never been started. Internal factory sealed bags including instructions. The 80 hp Le Rhone was developed before WWI and was used in many early aircraft. It did see service early in the Great War and it's follow on, the 110 hp Le Rhone was used in larger aircraft. The crankshaft of the Le Rhone mounted directly to the firewall and was part of the air and fuel intake system. The crankcase, propeller shaft and cylinders all revolved at about 1200 rpm. These three assemblies were carefully balanced to reduce vibration.

George Barris served as the AMT consultant and is credited (with others) for the custom touches possible with this kit. NOTE: the custom version is missing the custom gas cap and the master cylinder is missing. Inventoried with all other parts, decals and instructions present.

Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be deluxe kits as they were very complete and well made.
