RS Models Tachikawa Ki-94 II - Japanese High Altitude Interceptor, 1/72, 92038

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Mint

Sold

Still factory sealed. This excellent kit is crisply molded and features all fine recessed panel lines, resin details, many brass PE parts, an excellent cockpit, detailed wheel wells and optional parts to build either the prototype or the planned production version. Includes two sets of decals. The original Ki-94 (the 'I' variant) was to be a twin-boom design intended to intercept the B-29 Superfortress. However, the Japanese Army Air Force decided that it was too complicated, made too many 'leaps forward' and that the performance over overly optimistic. The 'II' variant (this kit) was a much more conventional design that still offered a great improvement over existing interceptors. It was designed for high-altitude battle and had a pressurized cockpit and very heavy armament. This design was approved by the Koku Hombu, and the aircraft was designated Ki-94-II (the scrapped earlier Ki-94 design was named the Ki-94-I). An order was placed for one static test airframe, three prototypes, and eighteen pre-production aircraft. Only 2 prototypes were built; the first was equipped with a single Nakajima Ha-44 engine driving a 4-blade propeller because the 6-blade prop was not ready. The second prototype was to be fitted with the correct propeller. But as with many other project, the approaching end of the war and shortage of resources brought a halt to the construction of the second prototype. At the end of the war, the first prototype still being readied for its maiden flight and although complete, probably did not fly.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc

Sold

Still factory sealed and from about 1972. This kit is from quality Airfix molds and includes four crew members as shown. MPC and Airfix had an interesting marketing history in the United States. Initially, MPC started marketing the entire Airfix line as 'Craftmaster' kits in the USA. Eventually they placed the MPC logo on the box tops but still had 'Craft Master' under the logo. The final chapter was MPC removing 'Craftmaster' all together and only having their own logo on the kits. From that point on, MPC was innovative in how the marketed the Airfix kits. They had many unique issues; some had wild custom parts and decals to match; others had extra ground crew. Others simply had special decals from historical aircraft. The most famous issue was the "Profile Series" which contained a quality Airfix kit and three choices of decals and all three aircraft illustrated in color on the box top.

The parts that were not factory sealed have been inventoried complete including decals and instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production.
