Maircraft Fokker D-VIII Flying Razor Solid Wood Model Airplane, 1/48, S22

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Sold

Maircraft was originally founded in the early or mid 1930s by Gordon Christoph and went by the name Aircraft Model Company. The company produced a typical line of solid 'profile cut' kits that required the usual high talent levels for carving and finishing. A former Comet Model Airplane & Supply Co. salesman, Jack Mair, bought the company in the early 1940s and renamed it Maircraft. This company was one of the handful of solid kit producers who issued models in a consistent 1/48 scale during the 1930s and 1940s (others included Hawk and Dyna-Model). This lead to one of the most desirable and rare model kits ever produced in the USA - the wood/plastic 1/48 United DC-3 model issued immediately after World War 2. Other than the P-61 and a few other Maircraft offerings, most were simple kits that sold for the low price of about 35 cents and gave the owners many hours of pleasurable work. This kit features a full size plan with instructions steps, fuselage that is about 80% cut, profile cut parts, printwood and a small bag of details. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions.

J Roberts AU-1 (F4U) Corsair - 34 Inch Wingspan Flying Model, 1/14, JRS-2

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Rare J. Roberts 'Flight Control' Model Mfg. Co. kit from Baker, Oregon. This is a fascinating and well designed kit with a very large degree of prefabrication. There is no fabric covering - everything is covered with wood. The engineering is fascinating. The wooden fuselage skins, for example, are in two parts (left and right) and are 100% formed, cut and shaped single sheets. The gull wing panels for the wing are fully shaped and cut, and the leading edge wing spar is fully shaped from balsa. The rudder and elevator are completely precut, as are numerous other parts that are fully shaped. Also features a spun aluminum cowl, formed canopy, shaped leading and trailing edges of balsa and hardwood, full color fuel proof decals, die-cut balsa parts, wire control linkage, full size plans and more. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including decals and instructions. J. Roberts line creator was J. Robert Smurthwaite. Bob Smurthwaite was a life-long Control Line flier and competitor who originated the three-line throttle controlling hardware, which was a matched set of a bellcrank for three lines and matching three-line handle. He created and sold several iconic kits, like the Martin AM-1 Mauler, designed for Control Lines Navy Carrier Event. His kits set a very high standard for the industry and are considered second only to the Lou Proctor line (which are considered museum grade). In the early 1990s Bob Smurthwaite closed the factory down. He passed away in 1992.

Skybolt failed 5 of 6 initial tests, but finally was successful. However, the program was canceled due to the availability of the Polaris SLBM. Plans to equip the RAF Vulcan with Skybolt fell through and left with British with no modern nuclear force, causing them to adapt the Polaris SLBM and passing strategic nuclear capability from the RAF to the RN. AGM-28 Hound Dog was a sleek design to help B-52 penetrate thick SAM defenses. Hound Dog could use it's engines to help the B-52 during take off and then could be refueled from the B-52's tanks. This was an important point as the B-52 carried 2 of these missiles at 5 tons each. Hound Dog had a range of 200 to 500 miles (depending on launch height) at Mach 2.0 and an accuracy of one mile at those ranges. The warhead was 4 megatons. SRAM was a nuclear-armed short range missile carried in quantity of 20. SRAM was designed to blast holes in defenses in front of the B-52 and for the final target. Quail was a decoy that would mimic the B-52 with radar reflectors, infrared, radar repeaters and chaff decoys. Quail did reach operational status and operated on some Hound Dog-equipped B-52s.
