Enterprise Cycle Miniatures Tandem Bicycle, 1/15, B2

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$38

Rare. Enterprise was a very successful maker of balsa wood free-flight and control line aircraft models dating well back into the 1930s. The Gowland/Revell 'Highway Pioneers' got the attention of Enterprise staff. Enterprise maintained their own museum of rare and extraordinary old time bicycles, so it only seemed natural that the first (and only) two plastic kits from the company would represent bikes. This model is of the Tandem, based on an example from 1896 and is very nicely molded and detailed for that time. It includes a display base also. This model and a 'Old High Wheeler' were fine kits issued in 1954 but did not sell well; production was discontinued after a short run. The kit has never been started. All parts are either still sealed in the 'krinkle' bag or have been inventoried 100% complete with the base.

Cruver 1949 Oldsmobile 98 Futuramic 4 Door Promo, 1/25

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$175

Very rare and even more so in this condition. Very early original dealer promotional model. It is 100% complete with all four door handles, trim and hood and trunk ornaments. This model came from a collector who began saving these in the late 1940s; it has always been adult owned. It has the black chassis with the following raised tex "Manufactured By Cruver Mfg Co Chicago" The tires look factory new. The whitewalls are excellent, which is rare - they were normally a weak point and would often crack and peel. The body is amazing 'near mint' condition; I cannot find any warping. The body color and beautiful and gloss as new. The thin clear windows are 'very good++' on the front and back, but the sides have some wrinkling as shown. Some of the fine trim (door handles, etc) has been painted to 'professional' quality; it is good enough to pass for factory paint.

SMP 1960 Chevrolet Nomad Station Wagon Friction Drive Promo, 1/25

The tires are factory new - it has never been played with and never exposed to smoke or light. It has the metal chassis factory-painted black and stamped "S.M.P. Mt Clemons Mich"; the friction motor still works. The body is OK but has some warping as shown. Body color is glossy and pretty with slight foxing. The front and rear bumpers are stamped metal. Some of the fine trim (door handles etc) has been painted to 'professional' quality; it is good enough to pass for factory paint.

Aurora Convair 880 SuperJet TWA, 1/103, 384-250

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Mint

$225

Still factory sealed. Dated 1961. The Convair 880 and it's near sister 990 were very high performance airliners. Unfortunately they did not find favor with commercial operators. Only 65 880s were produced from 1959 to 1962. The aircraft was designed to be smaller and faster than the DC-8 and 707 - this market did not develop, however, and if it did it could have been served with less expensive designs. The 990 was a larger and faster (mach .91) airliner, but it failed to meet it's range criteria for east to west crossings of the USA. As a result, only 37 were made. Interestingly enough, several 990s continued to be operated by private owners and NASA operated two 990s for decades after the last 990 was phased out of commercial service.

Advanced Molding Corp Ferrari 342 America Sports Car - (pre-Aurora), 1/32, 13

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$45

NOTE: builder only, please read carefully. Very rare and for the advanced builder/collector of early plastic models. Advanced Molding issued 7 pioneering plastic car kits in 1954. But in 1955, Aurora purchased the molds then released them (the first in '55) under the Aurora name and artwork. They became famous under the Aurora name but virtually unknown under the original Advanced label because they were issued for year or less. Advanced cleverly advertised all 7 kits on each box - the box top shows the kit inside, and the long side panels show 3 on each side. The 7 were the Cunningham, MG, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari Sportster, Corvette and Ferrari 342 America. This kit is the Ferrari Sportster, is molded in bright red with rubber tires. NOTE: this kit has the body shell assembled to 'professional' quality. Fit is perfect and the seamed are puttied and sanded. There is no other assembly and zero painting. All parts are present. With instructions that have a nice history of the car. Advanced was located at 54 West 21st Street, New York 10, NY. After selling the cars, Advanced remained in the plastic model business with the Trailblazers HO train series in 1955 centered around the famous "General." It was issued as a locomotive and tender, or just the cars as set (passenger, mail combine, baggage, box car, flat car and caboose), or the cars each separately and the rare freight set which included the locomotive and tender, box car, flat car and caboose.

Revell 1910 Pierce Arrow Highway Pioneers, 1/32, H48-89

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

$44

1953 issue, the first year for the 'Series Three' Highway Pioneers. The box is nice and the kit is molded in a stunning, bright red glossy acetate plastic. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys.
