Maircraft Globe Swift Solid Wood Model Airplane, 1/48, S-7

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Maircraft was originally founded in the early or mid 1930s by Gordon Christoph and went by the name Aircraft Model Company. The company produced a typical line of solid 'profile cut' kits that required the usual high talent levels for carving and finishing. A former Comet Model Airplane & Supply Co. salesman, Jack Mair, bought the company in the early 1940s and renamed it Maircraft. This company was one of the handful of solid kit producers who issued models in a consistent 1/48 scale during the 1930s and 1940s (others included Hawk and Dyna-Model). This lead to one of the most desirable and rare model kits ever produced in the USA - the wood/plastic 1/48 United DC-3 model issued immediately after World War 2. Other than the P-61 and a few other Maircraft offerings, most were simple kits that sold for the low price of about 35 cents and gave the owners many hours of pleasurable work. This kit features a full size plan with instructions steps, fuselage that is about 80% cut, profile cut parts, printwood and a small bag of details. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions.

ITC Stinson Model T Tri-Motor Eastern Air Service, 1/61, 3722

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

Rare. This famous early 1930s transport was the primary competition of the Ford Tri-Motor and saw widespread use. It was the idea of E.L. Cord, the money behind the aircraft and the owner of the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg automobile company. Cord also owned Lycoming, the engines that ended up on the final product. Another of Cord's companies was Century Airlines, which naturally used the aircraft. Century later became part of American Airlines. The Model T was used by many other airlines including Eastern, Delta, Braniff, TWA, United and American when they rolled up Century. The Tri-Motor carried 10 passengers, baggage and of course the mail, which was critical to early airline revenue. The aircraft proved successful and economical to operate. Includes clear windows, interior with passengers and pilots, Eastern Air Service decals and clear blue-tinted display stand. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.

Monogram Speedee-Bilt Vought F4U-5 Corsair Flying Scale Model - (F4U5), G14-100

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

Scale flying wooden rubber powered model from the early 1950s. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. The original "Speedee-Bilt" kits were in one-piece two-color boxes. In the early 1950s, shortly before plastic kits were available, Monogram changed to the 'hardbox' with a lithographic slick glued to the top as this kit. Speedee-Bilt kits contained die cut and pre painted wooden parts, completely formed airfoil wings, carved wheels and numerous plastic details like cowlings, pilot, missiles, prop and more. Assembly was by detailed full size plans. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.

It was 5 feet in length. The models these are well detailed. The Dart includes four missiles, one launcher, three stands, decals, one optical guidance unit and a crew of three. The Little John includes a detailed launcher with elevating rails, movable support legs, decals and crew of three. Never started. Megow Stinson - 24 inch Wingspan Balsa Wood Flying Model, C-5

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

I located this kit in the 1938 Megow catalog, so it is from near that year. Part of the famous 24 inch wingspan series of kits which were 25 cents each. Features print wood, pre-cut stringers, spars, wood stock, preformed wheels, very nicely pre-carved wooden propeller blank (needs sanding to complete), tissue paper and full size plans. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including plans. Fred Megow was a famous pioneer in the model aircraft field from the late 1920s and a very early manufacture for HO scale trains in the 1930s. His product lines of semi-prefabricated, solid and stick and tissue kits won him national and extensive world wide distribution - possibly the first modern model manufacture to achieve this. His fascinating story involves trying novel and untested marketing ideas in the Great Depression, followed my explosive world-wide growth. Mr. Megow was a true pioneer in the early days of modeling and a leader in the low price field so that every boy could afford a kit during those difficult times. Megow also produced scale operating train and trackside kits, ship models (large and small) and automotive subjects. Megow's catalogs claim that they were pioneers in HO scale, and there is documentation to support this fact. Megow's early HO train kits served not only to promote this now-popular scale nationally, but were among the very first train kits. Model train kits were responsible for the explosion in model railroad popularity in the late 1930s - please see the article in this website about these kits.
