Aurora 1903 Rambler Model E Touring, 1/16, 151

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Sold

1964 issue of Aurora's 'Super Detailed Museum Model with Plated Parts.' Done in a big 1/16 scale, this kit and the other 'Old Timers' in the series represented a significant leap forward in quality for Aurora. This kit features full engine, transaxle and driveline detail, complete interior, suspension and steering linkage, exhaust and more. Molded in red, black and with nickel plated parts and real white rubber tires. Never started. The red parts are still factory sealed; the parts that were never factory sealed have been inventoried complete. Includes instructions. Aurora was renowned for turning a profit and for keeping expenses down. In researching new kit subjects, they came upon a forgotten jewel - the Hudson Miniatures line of 1/16 scale wooden kits. Hudson had discontinued this line due to lack of sales of wooden kits. But the Hudson models were second to none in quality, research and documentation. Aurora was quick to realize this and used the research and layout from these kits to create the subjects for this 'Old Timers' series. It is fortunate for us that they did, because in most cases this is the only injection molded kit of these rare and classic early automobiles.

Most all Berkeley kits contain a high degree of prefabrication to speed up assembly. Founded in 1933 by William Effinger, the company was quite progressive in producing quality kits - it was likely the Berkeley 'Buccaneer' was the first gas powered model in kit form. In the later 1930s, Effinger acquired the services of a very talented Henry Struck. Struck went on to design numerous award-winning kits under the Berkeley name. Berkeley weathered the post WWII recession and emerged as a major kit producer in the late 1940 and 1950s. These were great years for Berkeley and they produced some incredible and large kits. The company went bankrupt in about 1960 however. Fox engines (Duke Fox) bought the company and released the kits alongside his own FOX models and engines. This arrangement did not last, and in the early 1960s the Berkeley name disappeared from hobby shop shelves.

Megow China Clipper - Martin M130 Hawaii Clipper, S-5

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Rare late 1930s/early 1940s solid wood scale model features a 6" wingspan, balsa printwood, fuselage block, color insignia sheet, detailed instructions and very nice plans. Never started and complete. Includes cut-out registration NC14714, the Hawaii Clipper. The Pan-Am Clippers were the high-point of luxury air travel. Passengers gazed out large windows from only 5,000 feet for an unprecedented view. The spacious cabin was all first class and there was every type of amenity available. In addition to the mysterious Orient, the Clippers stopped at exotic South Sea islands as well. Most had safe, long and distinguished service careers. The exception was the beautiful Hawaii Clipper. This Martin flying boat departed Alameda on a flight across the Pacific Ocean to Manila. Intermediate stops were made in Hawaii and Guam. The airplane departed Guam at 11:39 (18:30 CST). The last radio contact was at 22:03 CST saying that it was 565 miles from the Philippine coast, flying through layers of clouds and moderately rough air. The aircraft failed to arrive at Manila and a search was initiated. On 30 July, the Unites States Army transport ship USAT Meigs discovered an oil slick approximately 28 nautical miles (52 kilometers) south-southeast of the flying boat’s last reported position. The slick was described as being approximately 1,500 feet (457 meters) in circumference. No physical evidence of the Martin M-130 has ever been found. Search for the plane was called off on August 5, 1938. Fred Megow founded one of the very first national-wide (and world-wide) hobby empires during the 1930s Great Depression. Megow Models became a giant manufacture and carried extensive lines of solid scale model, flying stick-and-tissue rubber or gas powered models, rolling stock & passenger equipment and even an extensive line of military and civil ships in all sizes. His autobiography is available and makes fascinating reading. Megow kits are very collectible today for their high quality and attractive box designs.
