Monogram The Black Knight - (ex Aurora), 1/8, 85-6523

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed NM

Sold

Still factory sealed. Ideal builder model is the 2010 reissue from the original 1950s Aurora molds (originally obtained from Crown). This kit is the same scale as the other Aurora Knights. In the mid 1950s, Aurora bought three 'Knight' molds from Crown Plastics and issued them as K1, K2 and K3. These were the very first Aurora figure kits and they sported the 1956-only rectangular 'Northern Lights' logo with the correct 'Crown Line' logo inside it. The sales success of the Knight prompted Aurora to launch an entire line of figure kits. The knights themselves stayed in production long after many other figures were discontinued. When Aurora went out of business in 1976, they sold the molds to Monogram. However, Monogram did not release the Knights until well after Revell and Monogram merged.

The sales success of the Knight prompted Aurora to launch an entire line of figure kits. The knights themselves stayed in production long after many other figures were discontinued. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling's offering to be 'deluxe' compared to other manufacturers.

The Jet Commander was the jet-powered follow-on to the famous Aero Commander twin private aircraft. But shortly after 1121 delivery began in 1965, Rockwell bought Aero Commander. The 1121 was competition for the Rockwell Sabreliner business jet in the same class, so Rockwell sold the Jet Commander to IAI. Famous nicknames assigned to the early 1121s included the familiar 'ground pounder', 'lead sled' and more unique 'Jet Commode'. Initial releases under IAI were called the 1123. Improvements to the 1123 design lead to the IAI 1124 Westwind powered by Garrett 731 fan engines. I won't recount here all of the nicknames for the IAI Jet Commanders...but the most printable include "Bagel Bomber" and "Yom Kippur Clipper." Legend has it that these molds were lost and/or destroyed in a train wreck. Monogram bought Aurora's molds and was transporting them to the Monogram factory when the accident happened.
