Contrail Vickers Armstrong Warwick, 1/72

Vacuform Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

Very rare and the only kit ever made of this subject. Designed for Air Ministry specification B.1/35 for a two-engined heavy bomber, the Warwick was to replace the Wellington and used the same sturdy geodetic 'basket weave' construction. However, the prototype orders were cancelled in 1936 to concentrate on four-engine bombers. Vickers completed two of the prototypes anyway. RAF Coastal Command liked what it saw and eventually 712 Warwicks were produced and used for transports, air-sea rescue, meteorological recon and anti-submarine work. One saw use as a BOAC Transport and the aircraft was used by the Air Forces of Poland and South Africa. This model features well molded vac parts with numerous injection molded details. Alternate parts are included to build prototype CIII, BI., ASR I, ASR (B Mod), GR V and GR II. Includes full decals for many aircraft including the BOAC version and large painting/markings guide sheet with many photos of actual aircraft. The kit has never been started. The small parts are still in the factory sealed bags; the larger parts were never factory sealed and have been inventoried complete. With decals and plan/instructions. Please note that vacuform models are only recommended for those experienced with their constructions. Certain skills, including scratchbuilding, are required. They are not for beginners.

Maircraft Douglas DC-3 United Airlines' Mainliner 180 - Scale Solid Model Kit, 1/48, X-2

Wood and Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Sold

One of the rarest and most valuable aircraft models in US history, and certainly the finest solid model ever produced. The add from Model Airplane News in 1947 states 'MUCH MORE THAN A MODEL - IT'S A MINIATURE AIRPLANE!' - and it's true. The company originally produced solid scale models, but plastics were just coming into play and plastic was not considered a 'strategic war material.' Maircraft decided to produce their first deluxe kit with many injection molded details, and the excellent P-61 Black Widow model was introduced in 1945 at a very high price for that time. The P-61 must have sold, as the next project was determined to be the DC-3. Development of this great kit must have taken 1/2 a year or more as . Maircraft started to run adds in late 1946 modeling magazines with a 'price to be announced' statement; the January Model Airplane News add showed the whopping price of $9.95 - almost unheard of during that time. Maircraft's timing for such a wonderful model was unfortunate - almost all model manufacturers predicted a huge boom in sales once the war ended and the opposite occurred, causing poor sales and high inventory levels. Maircraft went out of business shortly after introduction of the DC-3. I purchased this model from the original owner who purchased it new in 1947. This kit has never been started and is complete. The box is complete, has great colors, no tears, solid original corners and some litho bubbling. There is no fading, stains, writing or tears in the cardboard or the litho. The box has general age and shelf wear as shown and is slightly crunched as it appears that someone place a heavier box on it at one point. The kit has never been started and is inventoried 100% complete. All internal display packing cardboard is intact. All injection molded details are still factory-affixed to the red display - landing gear and braces, two exhaust stacks, main wheels, rear baggage door and door frame, two air scoops, two cowls, two props, two P&W engines, forward cargo door and door frame, tail wheel, VHF Range and Glide Path antenna, loop antenna, two clear landing lights, main entrance door and door frame, tail wheel well and strut, two oil coolers and two clear landing lights. For the wooden parts, high quality balsa is used. Wings and stabilizers are cut to profile, except the center wing section was finished to an airfoil by the factory. Engine nacelles and fuselage sections are factory-cut and about 70% to shape. Many other factory-carved and stock wooden parts are present as well. The elaborate 'Douglas DC-3 Complete Template Sheet' is intact. Clear window material for cabin windows is included and the bag of hardware is still factory sealed. Paperwork is complete and excellent as well, including the parts order sheet, sheet, 'Note from the Engineering Staff' and the 'Douglas DC-3 Illustrated Instruction Brochure' book are all in excellent condition with light foxing as the only flaw. The plans - the crowning glory of the model - are perhaps the most accurate ever produced outside of Douglas Aircraft Company. They are in excellent condition and have probably been opened two or three times judging from the lack of wear. The large and colorful decal sheet is 'excellent' and flat and has only light yellowing and age wear. Please note that the fuselage is hollow when built and full details are provided for cockpit and cabin detail and notes on lighting the model. A true investment-quality piece of modeling history for the advanced collector. For the protection of the buyer this model will only be shipped via Express Mail Insured. Maircraft was originally founded in the early or mid 1930s by Gordon Christoph and went by the name Aircraft Model Company. The company produced a typical line of solid 'profile cut' kits that required the usual high talent levels for carving and finishing. A former Comet Model Airplane & Supply Co. salesman, Jack Mair, bought the company in the early 1940s and renamed it Maircraft.

Monogram Speedee-Bilt Grumman F9F Panther Jet - Flying Scale Model For Jetex Engine, G16-100

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

Rare model dated 1957. Scale flying wooden rubber powered model from the early 1950s. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. The original "Speedee-Bilt" kits were in one-piece two-color boxes. In the mid 1950s, shortly before plastic kits were available, Monogram changed to the 'hardbox' with a lithographic slick glued to the top, as this F9F kit. Speedee-Bilt kits contained die cut, factory painted wooden parts, completely formed airfoil wings (the famous and beautiful 'Monofoil'), carved wheels and numerous plastic details like the cowling, pilot, missiles, prop and more, depending on the kit. Assembly was by detailed, illustrated plans. The Panther Jet features die-cut dark Navy Blue painted balsa parts, a perfect Monofoil wing, completely carved fuselage blocks, stringers, completely finished wheels, numerous plastic detail parts such as nose, intakes, gear struts, exhaust section, pilot bust and wing-mounted missiles, clear vacuform canopy (still in mint condition, clear and not yellowed), sandpaper, full color decals, Navy Blue covering material and full instructions. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and paperwork present. My father has a fine memory and story regarding this model. During the Michigan winter months, he would naturally build models. However, they could not be flown outside so he would fly them in the basement on a tether line hooked to a full gallon paint can. This was even done with gas powered control line aircraft, using a hair pin to keep the elevator fixed in the right position! After finishing the very beautiful Speedee-Bilt F9F, he decided to install the recommended Jetex motor and do some tether flying. The Jetex started flawlessly and propelled the very light weight model to very high speeds. However, the heat of the motor casing soon caught the back on fire. It was a fascinating spectacle to watch the Panther jet circling wildly while trailing a foot or more of flame from the aft section. Finally the flames reached something important, and the craft split in two which quickly ended one of the most memorable and entertaining of all basement winter flights.

Monogram F-51D (P-51D) Mustang Action Model - Four Star Issue, 1/32, PA77-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Dated 1962. First issue of this classic 'Action Model' with great detail and mold quality. Features opening canopy to show the highly detailed cockpit, tiny levers under the wings drop 2 bombs, a small knob on the bottom rotates and extends and retracts the main gear and tailwheel; all gear doors including tailwheel open and close automatically with the gear. Not only do these features sound great, but they work. My built kit is over 40 years old and functions like new! Molded in silver, black and clear. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The decals are flat and 100% intact but NOTE: there are are light brown stains (age foxing) on the backing paper only. The actual transfers are clear. This kit has an interesting history. In 1961, Monogram introduced the 1/32 scale Phantom Mustang. This was a very ambitious project. The kit was transparent, highly detailed and included two electric motors. One motor raised and lowered the main gear and tail wheel while the other spun the prop. Two small levers on the base dropped bombs from the wings. It was molded in clear, silver, black, red and zinc chromate green. Although successful, the kit was expensive to produce and Monogram charged a hefty retail price of $4.98. As a way to create more revenue from the molds, Monogram cleverly created this kit - using some of the same molds as the Phantom Mustang. The silver parts tree was completely re-cut and does not match the Phantom version. The red stand, gears and motorizing features were simply left out and the model molded in solid colors. The gear retraction/extension features was retained, but not motorized. On the new silver parts tree they added a small knob (placed on the bottom of the wing) and the same for the bomb dropping mechanism. This lowered the price to $1.98 and this additional revenue hopefully helped pay down the original mold costs.
