Monogram Speedee Bilt B-25 Mitchell - Wood and Plastic Model Aircraft, H-1

Wood and Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Rare early Monogram kit from the early 1950s. Fantastically well detailed and presented multi-media kit with 34 injection molded parts in clear, red, black and gray acetate and 57 die cut or shaped balsa parts including the famous Monofoil pre-formed wings. This example has never been started. The yellow, clear and red black plastic parts are still in the factory sealed red boxes. The other parts were never sealed and have been inventoried 100% complete with decals (in amazing 'near mint' condition), sand paper, plans and instruction book (both also in 'near mint' condition). It still has all of the correct internal packing as shown. Please note that this kit must be shipped insured. This is the first large-scale non-flying scale Speedee-Bilt model, the B-25 Mitchell. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. Monogram, however, wanted to make true scale models that could still be assembled easily. So they created the four large and highly detailed non-flying scale Speedee-Bilt bombers - the B-25, B-26, B-24 and B-17. The kits were a tremendous success and sold well in the early to mid 1950s.

Monogram Speedee Bilt B-17 Bomber - Memphis Belle, 1/62, H3-495

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Very rare, classic early multi-media kit from 1954 with a fantastic internal part presentation. Features the amazing Monofoil Wing, dozens of cleanly die-cut balsa wood piece on factory-painted sheets, completely precarved fuselage blocks and other pieces, injection molded clear parts for all windows and canopies, nose and tail sections, wing tips, crew members, turrets, propellers, cowlings, wheels, nacelles and more, Monoglue cement unopened in the original box, four glass bottles of Monodope which are all still good and more. Includes a beautiful full-size fold out plan, a highly detailed and heavily illustrated instructions booklet, extensive full color decals and even a small catalog showing the full Speedee-Bilt line, Superkit line, Jet Racers and even Monogram's first two plastic kits (P-1 Midget Racer and P-2 Hot Rod). This kit has never been started. Inside, all of the internal cardboard presentation material is in amazing 'near mint' condition. All of the parts in the three upper trays are still factory tape sealed. All the parts that were not sealed have been inventoried complete. The plans and instructions are in 'excellent+++' condition and the decals are in 'excellent++' condition with light yellowing as the only significant flaw. The box displays better than the 'good' rating but is graded as such because of the heavy edge wear and hole shown on the lower center/left box edge, two factory tape tears on the long sides (about 1.75" long and 3/4" wide) and other general wear as shown. Please note, this kit must be shipped insured. These models have a fascinating history. Before injection molded plastic kits were common, Monogram issued the famous 'Speede-Bilt' and 'Super Kits' which featured injection molded details and precarved wooden parts. Of these, the Speede-Bilt B-24 and B-17 were the finest. These kits are rare today because there was only one issue, their relatively high 1950s price of $4.95 and the fact that injection molded plastic kits came out one year and were taking the US market by storm; it was the end of the wooden kit era.

Airfix HMS Ark Royal Aircraft Carrier - Type Three Issue, 1/600, F408S

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

1960s issue Type 3 logo model and one of the best injection-molded Ark Royal kits. This is a full hull model with excellent detail for that time and an airwing of Fairey Fulmars. Never started and inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. This aircraft carrier was the third vessel of the Royal Navy to be named Ark Royal - the first ship took part in the defeat of the Spanish Armada, and the second was being constructed as a tanker when the Royal Navy took it over and converted it to become the first seaplane carrier. The Ark Royal III was launched in April 13, 1937 and was very active during WWII. She was reported sunk several times by German sources. She took part in the defense of Norway. In October of that year, she and Renown went to the South Atlantic to hunt for the Graf Spee. Later her Skuas took part in a gallant but failed attack the Scharnhorst. She then moved to Gibraltar with Force H. In May of 1941, she took part in the search for the Bismarck. Her Swordfish torpedo aircraft scored two hits, one of which jammed the rudders of the German Battleship while she was in a tight turn. This hit sealed the fate of Bismarck, and she was sunk. If this hit would not have occurred, she would have made safe haven at Brest. In November of 1941, the Ark Royal was working the dangerous escort of Malta convoys when she was struck by a torpedo from U-81. Despite all attempts to save her, she went down. Only one sailor lost his life.
