Orange Crush-Revell 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible, 1/32

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair++

Sold

Very rare kit with a fascinating history. Around 1958/59, Orange Crush of Mexico offered a promotion. They offered free, colorful, plastic model cars if you collected correctly-marked Orange Crush bottle caps. The most common set is the 1/32 scale Revell Highway Pioneer series - although there is no mention of Revell or Lodela anywhere on the box. Orange Crush had the boxes and even the instructions specially made for them with no mention of a manufacturer. What most people have never seen is the other cars the Crush offered beyond the Highway Pioneers. Again, these were from Revell (Lodela) molds and this time 'Revell' is listed two short box sides in addition to Orange Crush. Inside, the instructions are specially made for Orange Crush but also have the Revell logo. Inside is the classic Revell kit with detailed engine and chassis, opening hood, detailed interior with separately molded inside panels and driver and passenger figures. Molded in ivory plastic. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. Once you had your bottle caps, they could be redeemed one of two ways - at the Orange Crush truck and at a Modelandia Hobby House. Orange Crush also released two full-color booklets and a complete paint set for the cars. A colorful cardboard box held 7 colors of paint in glass bottles, complete with 'Orange Crush' screw-on caps! Robina S.A. was the bottler or distributor of Orange Crush in Mexico at that time. The box side shows three sizes of OC - Family Size (Familiar), Grand (Grande) and Normal. You could also obtain models with Titan bottle caps. Titan was also bottled by Robina and came in large (Titan) and smaller (Titancito) sizes and apparently more than one flavor, judging from the box side illustration. It is not know for how long the promotion lasted, but Orange Crush was one of the most dominant soft drinks in Mexico at that time. Here is one clue: some boxes claim that Modelandia had 13 locations; other boxes, which obviously came later on, claim 19 locations. This indicated that the promotion went on for a significant amount of time. Oddly enough, the '56 Eldorado box does not mention Modelandia, although we know they were deeply involved in the Crush Highway Pioneers. This kit must be shipped insured.

Master Modelcraft Supply Co Baltimore Clipper - Commodore Famous Ship Line - 17 Inch Long And 12 Inch High Highly Prefabricated Wood And Plastic Ship, C-4

Wood and Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair

Sold

Very, very rare model from 1954. Everyone knows of the Master Modelcraft aircraft kits. The ship kits are much rarer, and the Commodore Series was their 'flagship' of the modeling line. In an attempt to simply the difficult task of making wooden parts look like an intricate ship, they created perhaps the ultimate prefabricated classic ship models with completely finished wooden parts, metal fittings and numerous plastic parts. This model features a factory-finished wood hull, one sheet of die-cut printwood, and the rest of the parts are metal or plastic: there are 37 injection molded plastic parts from bulwarks to masts and yardarms and cast metal deck fittings as well. The model kit has never been started. The kit has been inventoried and NOTE: one part, a capstan. Otherwise inventoried complete with all other parts and paperwork present. The yards and masts are still attached to the blue factory presentation cardboard. With excellent instructions, large full size plan with two sides including many other drawings, rigging diagram, section view and step-by-step text instructions. Please NOTE that the box is rough and only grades 'fair,' which is not collectible condition. Master Modelcraft Supply Company listed their address as N.Y. 66, New York during the early 1950s. The costly Commodore Series included C-1 Revenue Cutter, C-2 Brig Washington, C-3 Brig Boxer and C-4 Baltimote Clipper. Each was $2.95, a small fortune at that time for hobby kits. This contributed to their demise, low production numbers and rarity today. They also made a lesser line of ship kits that were prefabricated, but not to the level of the Commodore Series. They were all wood with metal fittings (part numbers B-1 through B-18). The Brig Washington was built in 1838 and was originally schooner rigged. In 1838 she was rerigged as a brig. During most her career she engaged in hydrographic work. Her 12 pound gun had a unique arrangement on a rotating turret-like platform amidships, enabling it to have a great field of fire. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, the Washington was seized by the Confederacy and armed with one huge 42 pound carronade and impressed into the Confederate Navy. She was finally scuttled in 1862 near New Orleans to prevent capture by the Union Navy.

Fred Megow was a famous pioneer in the model aircraft field from the late 1920s till 1949. His product lines of semi-prefabricated, solid and stick and tissue kits won him national and extensive world wide distribution - possibly the first modern model manufacture to achieve this. His fascinating story involves trying novel and untested marketing ideas in the Great Depression, followed my explosive world-wide growth. Mr. Megow was a true pioneer in the early days of modeling and a leader in the low price field so that every boy could afford a kit during those difficult times. Megow also produced scale operating train and trackside kits, ship models (large and small) and automotive subjects. Megow's catalogs claim that they were pioneers in HO scale, and there is documentation to support this fact. Megow's early HO train kits served not only to promote this now-popular scale nationally, but were among the very first train kits. Model train kits were responsible for the explosion in model railroad popularity in the late 1930s - please see the article in this website about these kits.

Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling's offering to be 'deluxe' compared to other manufacturers.

Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.
