Most all Berkeley kits contain a high degree of prefabrication to speed up assembly. Founded in 1933 by William Effinger, the company was quite progressive in producing quality kits - it was likely the Berkeley 'Buccaneer' was the first gas powered model in kit form. In the later 1930s, Effinger acquired the services of a very talented Henry Struck. Struck went on to design numerous award-winning kits under the Berkeley name. Berkeley weathered the post WWII recession and emerged as a major kit producer in the late 1940 and 1950s. These were great years for Berkeley and they produced some incredible and large kits. The company went bankrupt in about 1960 however. Fox engines (Duke Fox) bought the company and released the kits alongside his own FOX models and engines. This arrangement did not last, and in the early 1960s the Berkeley name disappeared from hobby shop shelves.

Monogram US Air Force Refueling Group B-47 And KC-135, 1/240, P409-49

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

Very rare. When Monogram invested in the tooling for the 18 aircraft "Air Power" kit, the sales did not meet expectations. In order to increase revenue from the molds, Monogram issued the "Refueling Group," "Bomber Group" and "Fighter Group" in the "Forty Niner" series with the Tu-16 Badger, F-101 and P-40. These kits used airplanes from the set with new blue-molded special stands and unique decal and instructions sets. All aircraft are well molded with recessed panel line detail. Decals and instructions are both in 'excellent++' condition although the box has wear as shown. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc+

Sold

Still factory sealed. 1985 issue. Possibly from Otaki molds. Very nice quality kit with all recessed panel lines. Includes colorful Airbus lettering and full color stripes as shown on the box photo. The Guppy is basically a powered aluminum balloon. It has tremendous capacity and loads through the swing-away nose. The first Guppy was built to haul Saturn V parts from California to Florida in order to avoid shipping delays via ships going through the Panama Canal. All Guppy aircraft are built from retired Boeing Stratocruisers. The pistons were replaced with more powerful turbo-props, and the Super Guppy is only 52 mph slower than the Stratocruiser.

Aurora CVN-65 USS Enterprise Attack Carrier For Motorizing, 1/400, 720-995

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

First issue dated 1961 with John Steel box artwork. Aurora pulled out all the stops on this very large kit with a very large tooling cost to match. The result is a nicely detailed model that is well-designed for actual operation in water. As a bonus, the first issue only had the flight deck pre-painted with black background and white lines (as per the box art) and is in very good shape. The kit is over 33 inches long when assembled and is intended to be motorized. Very easy conversion to R/C (remote control). Aurora sold a separate motorizing kit that contained the electric motors and other needed parts. This kit features four (5 bladed) props, stuffing boxes, dual operational rudders, a very large sheet color decals for the ship and airwing, waterline striping tape, moving elevators, twin Sea Sparrow launchers, plated display stand, detailed island structure with clear windows, large airwing with 40 aircraft including F-4 Phantom, F-8 Crusader, A-4 Skyhawk and two Hup Helicopters and more. The kit has never been started. Many parts are still in the factory sealed internal bags. The ones that were no longer sealed have been inventoried and the actual ship is complete but NOTE: the display stand is missing one small round ball (an end cap on a rod) and the instructions look like photocopies; however, Aurora also issued them exactly like this when they ran out of originals (I have seen it often). Otherwise complete with all other parts. Aurora sold the motorizing parts separately and they are not included. In case you are curious, the 'sold separately' parts are two steel ballast weights, four brass battery clips and 4 battery contacts, wire, two electric motors and small nuts and bolts. All other hardware, gear boxes, motor mounts, worm gears, stuffing boxes, metal shafts and tubes, battery box etc are included with the standard kit.

Aurora Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina, 1/74, 374-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Rare, first issue artwork from about 1956-57. This was a fine effort by Aurora for that time and an impressive model when assembled. Features retracting pontoons and rotating props. Includes correct early logo instructions which show the clear 'Triangle World' stand. That stand is correctly included. This must be one of the first instances of the 'Triangle' stand being used as it is normally associated with oval 'Famous Fighter' logo kits. Molded in gloss silver/gray and clear. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. NOTE: the back half of the pitot tube is broken off and is missing. Only the front part is present. It is interesting to note that the early Aurora PBY issue has at least three small variations to the box top. The very first issue says '1/4 SCALE MODEL' at the top right. Clearly, this kit is not 1/48 scale and someone at Aurora corrected it. Following that, there are two known corrections: early and late. On the early version, the '1/4' was blotted out with a dark blue oval or circle and '5/32' was added after the word 'SCALE.' It was now correct, but the appearance was not completely professional. This box is the later version - on the next box order, they kept the '1/4' blotted out but added a proper looking '5/32' in front of the blot.

Lindberg Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat - (F6F5) 'Large Box' Variant, 1/72, 593

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

1970s large one-piece box issue. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Lindberg is a company with a fascinating history The original 'Lindberg Line' stretches back to the 1930s when Paul Lindberg drew plans for famous modeling magazines and marketed his balsa wood 'stick and tissue' by urging dealers to carry the '...Complete Lindberg Line'. After the war, Lindberg and Olsen had a strong hand in early United States injection molded kit development. Please see the article located on this website about early USA plastic kit manufacturers.
