From Dusty Rhodes - With her sister Kentucky, these were the first US BBs to make extensive use of electrical auxiliary systems. Superposition of the 13- and 8-inch turrets was problematic and vigorously debated. Nonetheless, these ships were powerfully gunned by international standards of the day. She was rebuilt as a crane ship in 1920 and provided valuable service in that role until 1956. (Crane parts and mods not included in this kit.)

From Dusty Rhodes: The battleship Iowa was a significant improvement over the Indiana Class. With higher freeboard, Iowa was the first US battleship designed for high seas battles. Armament layout and other advances were significant also. Iowa played a central role in the Cuban Blockage and at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in 1898. She was slightly damaged by 152mm fire from Spanish cruisers and one of those, Vizcaya, actually struck to Iowa after receiving punishing main battery fire. After the Spanish-American War, Iowa was upgraded and continued to see duty including that of guardship at Chesapeake Bay in WW I. As a radio-controlled target ship in 1923, she was noted for deftly out-maneuvering Army aircraft. Ultimately Iowa (now Coastal Battlship No. 4) was sunk during Fleet Problem I in February 1923 by 3 x 14" hits from Mississippi. In honor of the ship's role at Santiago, a 21-gun salute was rendered as the crews of Mississippi and other BBs present lined the rails.
