Miniature Aircraft Vought Corsair F2G Thompson Trophy Winner - Gas Model (F4U) - 41 inch Wingspan For Free Flight Or Control Line, 1/12

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Very rare and from 1949. True 1/12 scale flying or display model. Miniature Aircraft was well known for turning out the finest scale detailed models during this time - as their catalog says, 'The Worlds Finest Model Aircraft.' The kit cost around $5 when it was new- very expensive considering the most popular model aircraft were 10 cents. The limited production and sales have made all Miniature Aircraft kits rare and valuable today. The model has not been started. Includes all printed balsa sheets in 'near mint' condition, a beautiful spun aluminum cowling, clear vacuform canopy (in excellent condition and not yellow), rubber main and tail wheels with metal hubs, all spars, leading/training edges and strip stock, stock sheet wood, die-cut hardwood firewall, hardwood dowels, metal wire, color insignia, black and white instrument panel (on the plans), very large full-size scale plans that included text instructions and a number of detail drawings that leave nothing to chance. The plans are 'very good++' with typical yellowing and a few small edge tears but nothing major. The box top and bottom tray are all original and complete. Amazingly, the box top has four solid non-split corners and light general wear. The lower box (or tray) is also in good condition.

Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Frog is considered the father of injection molded model kits. The Lines Brothers opened Frog in 1932, capitalizing on the fever caused by Lindberg's solo transatlantic flight. Almost overnight the western populations became 'Air-Minded', and anything aviation was in high demand. Frog created a quality line of stick and tissue rubber powered aircraft and gliders as well as innovative ready-to-fly rubber powered aircraft that required no assembly. The box even contained a built-in rubber motor winder and fuselage holder. Model airplane flight competitions were popular in Great Britain, and one category was 'Rise Off the Ground', or ROG. By changing this to 'Flies Right Off the Ground', the FROG name was born. In 1936 Frog created a line of injection molded plastic models, the first such kit line in the world (Hawk sold a line of injection molded aircraft models in 1934 but they were factory assembled and painted). Named 'Penguin' after the bird that does not fly, the kits were innovative beyond the means of production. At a time when models were simply built by wingspan, the Penguin line was a constant 1/72 scale. Furthermore, a large 1/72 Short S.30 Empire class flying boat contained a full interior and lights! A line of accessories such as AA guns, tractors, hanger, ambulance, sound locator, searchlights and lighting kits were quickly added to the line. WWII caused a pause in production. After the war the box color changed from silver to green, and Penguin kits were also marketed in the USA. Production ended in 1950. Frog quickly expanded and released the Red, Orange, Black, Green, Gold Token, Spin and Comet series as well as Trail Blazers and several others. It is noteworthy that while most manufacturers in the 1940s/50 were making toy-like models, Frog attempted to make very realistic models. For example, 'detailing' kits with excessively large rivets was once very popular. Frog ignored this trend and continued to mold aircraft with fine panel lines and no rivets. As a result, Frog kits can be built into very realistic replicas. Production ended in the late 1970s, but Frog molds are still in use around the world.

Heller Dunkerque Battlecruiser, 1/400, L1025

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Rare. The Dunkerque-class Battlecruisers were the French response to the German Graf Spee-class and the fast and well-armed Italian ships at the time. If the 1900 to 1930 span of French shipbuilding could be defined as lacking a clear vision or plan, the Strasbourg and her sister decisively ended that period. The products of superior design and engineering, the two sisters would re-define fast capital ships as would their near-sisters Battleships Richelieu and Jean Bart after them. But world events would conspire against these beautiful ships and there visibility in naval history. The Dunkerque was laid down on 24 Dec, 1932 at St. Nazaire, launched on 2 Oct, 1935 and put into service on 15 Apr, 1937. Displacement was 26,500 ton and top speed was 30 knots. Main armament was (8) 330mm guns and (16) 130 mm dual purpose. The main and secondary guns were mounted in the first quadruple turrets. Both main 330 mm turrets faced forward and had almost unlimited arcs of fire - so that all main guns could fire when the enemy was sighted or in pursuit. Her superior speed would allow her to escape anything that she could not out-gun. Like most advanced ships of the day she featured the 'All-Or-Nothing' armor design or 'armored box'. The compact design and placement of the main and secondary armament allowed unusually high armor protection for a battlecruiser. Serious consideration was also given to underwater protection, and the ships had a unique and effective (as events would prove) anti-mine/torpedo system with a novel water-exclusive material. At Mers-El-Kebir, the Dunkerque was pinned at the pier. The British fired 15 inch shells, which the Dunkerque's deck armor was surprisingly resistant to. In an unlucky set of events, the auxiliary ship Terre Neuve moored next to her was sunk during the battle with a full load of depth-charges. Later, a torpedo set off the huge explosive cargo. The damage to Dunkerque was immense. She was hastily repaired and fled to Toulon, where she was joined by the hastily repaired Strasbourg. The French tried to repair Dunkerque as best they could but the wartime resources and material were very limited. However, when the Germans threatened to seize the ships, the entire fleet including the two sisters was scuttled in the harbor. The Italians raised the Strasbourg and stripped her of her guns; but she was bombed and sunk by Allied aircraft. In 1945 she was raised again, but salvage was beyond hope. In 1959 she was sold for scrap. Kit has never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.

Airfix RMS Queen Elizabeth Ocean Liner, 1/600, 06201-9

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

The famous Queen Elizabeth was the largest liner in the world when launched in 1938. She saw extensive service during WWII as a troop transport. After the war, she and the original Queen Mary formed the backbone of Cunard Atlantic Service in unparalleled luxury. Some customers favored the Queen Elizabeth for her modern lines and more modern interior fittings. She was supposed to be on display in the USA on the opposite shore of the Queen Mary, but buyers never materialized. While serving as a 'College Ship' she burned in Hong Kong Harbor where she was scrapped, but only after appearing in a James Bond film as a MI-6 hide-out. Well done full-hull model with good details. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions.
