Hawk F-84F Thunderstreak - One-Piece Box Issue, 1/72, 606

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+++

$44

Rare early issue Hawk kit in the flip-top box. Hawk was a manufacturer of 1/48 constant scale solid wooden models well before plastic, but they jumped on the plastic band wagon very early. Most of the first issue 'flip box' plastic kits were 1/48 - this kit, however, is one of the earlier 1/72 scale kits from Hawk. The kit is molded in the correct silver with the early style stand and correct instructions and decals. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Thanks to Jean-Claude who told me that the boxart shows a standard F-84F but in reality the model inside is of prototype YF-96A, (aka YF-84F), s/n 49-2430. this aircraft was later modified to become the YRF-84F parasite fighter in combination with GRB-36F.It is on display at the USAF Museum, Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio.

Hawk Nieuport 17 - Flip-Top Box Issue, 1/48, 706

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+++

$48

First issue from the 1950s in the one-piece box. The box is in excellent condition. Inside, the kit parts are still sealed in the original factory crinkle bag. Molded in high gloss yellow and black. In the 1920s/30/s/40s Hawk made constant scale 1/48 aircraft kits from wood. In 1946 they added plastic injection molded kits to the line and were possibly the first injection molded kit manufacturer in the USA. When Hawk made an early jump to all-plastic kits they kept the 1/48 scale and created these new one-piece boxes with two color artwork. The model has not been started. Complete with instructions and all parts. This is from the early part of the first issue, and Hawk did not issue decals until later.

Revell 1953 Jaguar XK-120 Highway Pioneers - Series 4, 1/32, H56-69

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

$39

1953 original issue of the famous Highway Pioneers 'Foreign Car' series. These issues feature the same 5 car artwork on every box; the only way to identify the contents was an ink-stamped name on the box ends. Molded in light green plastic. This kit has never been started. All parts are still in the factory sealed bag. Includes instructions. These kits have a fascinating history. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream and never made the top 10 list of boys activities. Spurred on by the nation-wide aviation craze in the 1920s, many became modelers and built flying or static wooden models of airplanes, ships, trains, automotive and other subjects. Basic kits existed, but many of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s when the Gowland & Gowland/Revell Highway Pioneers became the sales sensation of the year. Demand was so great that the factories could not keep up and almost overnight 'model building' was mainstream. The phenomenon of the 'Highway Pioneers' kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles fit the bill: they could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real cars. The success of the Highway Pioneers lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the late 1950s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys...and many adult males too!
