Monogram The Big T Custom T Ford Street and Show Pickup, 1/8, 85-4163

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

1999 reissue of the this 1962 masterpiece. In the early 1960s Monogram invested in a series of huge 1/8 scale models with extraordinary detail and working features. The complete line consisted of the Big 'T' Street/Rod (this model), Big Drag Competition Roadster, Big Rod Show/Go Roadster, Big Tub Custom Phaeton and Big Deuce '32 Ford Roadster. The Big T molds cost over $100,000 to produce - 1962 money - an absolute fortune at the time. The design work alone for the molds was $40,000. The total cost of the complete 1/8 scale project was over $1,000,000 - in 1963 money. The result was nearly flawless, large American automotive models that has never been equaled to this day. This issue of the Big T has 120 precision parts. It starts with a 1924 Ford Model T Roadster bucket, a shortened Model A pickup bed and a Chevy V-8 engine. It features 4" chopped windshield frame, custom raised or lowered top, custom pinstriping and flame decals, simluateld rolled and pleated naugahyde, custom dashboard, chrome wire front wheels with Michelin tires, rear American 200S Daisy mags with BF Goodrich rubber, suicide type front spring perch, chopped '24 T grille sheel, custom headlight brackets with tractor headlamps, winged Boyce Moto-MJeter radiator mascot, Model A tailgate, bedcover, gas tanks, Halibrand quick change rear end, 47 Ford rear backing plates and rear brake drums, custom rear radius rods, custom exhaust system, engine wiring, flexible hoses and much more. Monogram excluded some of the optional parts from this reissue. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions.

Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Frog is considered the father of injection molded model kits. The Lines Brothers opened Frog in 1932, capitalizing on the fever caused by Lindberg's solo transatlantic flight. Almost overnight the western populations became 'Air-Minded', and anything aviation was in high demand. Frog created a quality line of stick and tissue rubber powered aircraft and gliders as well as innovative ready-to-fly rubber powered aircraft that required no assembly. The box even contained a built-in rubber motor winder and fuselage holder. Model airplane flight competitions were popular in Great Britain, and one category was 'Rise Off the Ground', or ROG. By changing this to 'Flies Right Off the Ground', the FROG name was born. In 1936 Frog created a line of injection molded plastic models, the first such kit line in the world (Hawk sold a line of injection molded aircraft models in 1934 but they were factory assembled and painted). Named 'Penguin' after the bird that does not fly, the kits were innovative beyond the means of production. At a time when models were simply built by wingspan, the Penguin line was a constant 1/72 scale. Furthermore, a large 1/72 Short S.30 Empire class flying boat contained a full interior and lights! A line of accessories such as AA guns, tractors, hanger, ambulance, sound locator, searchlights and lighting kits were quickly added to the line. WWII caused a pause in production. After the war the box color changed from silver to green, and Penguin kits were also marketed in the USA. Production ended in 1950. Frog quickly expanded and released the Red, Blue, Orange, Black, Green, Gold Token, Spin and Comet series as well as Trail Blazers and several others. It is noteworthy that while most manufacturers in the 1940s/50 were making toy-like models, Frog attempted to make very realistic models. For example, 'detailing' kits with excessively large rivets was once very popular. Frog ignored this trend and continued to mold aircraft with fine panel lines and no rivets. As a result, Frog kits can be built into very realistic replicas. Production ended in the late 1970s, but Frog molds are still in use around the world.

Aurora Old Timers 1911 Buick Bug, 1/16, 574-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: NM

Sold

1963 first issue of Aurora's 'Super Detailed Museum Model with Plated Parts.' Done in a big 1/16 scale, this kit and the other 'Old Timers' in the series represented a significant leap forward in quality for Aurora. The kit features full engine, transaxle and driveline detail. It builds up a rolling chassis like the real car, and includes full exhaust and a detailed interior. Molded in gloss dark green, gloss ivory and with plated parts and real rubber tires. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. Aurora was renowned for turning a profit and for keeping expenses down. In researching new kit subjects, they came upon a forgotten jewel - the Hudson Miniatures line of 1/16 scale wooden kits. Hudson had discontinued this line due to lack of sales of wooden kits. But the Hudson models were second to none in quality, research and documentation. Aurora was quick to realize this and used the research and layout from these kits to create the subjects for this 'Old Timers' series. It is fortunate for us that they did, because in most cases this is the only injection molded kit of these rare and classic early automobiles.

The model has not been started. Inventoried complete. These aircraft were common in the 1930s when the sport of free-flight model airplanes reached it's zenith. It was not uncommon for these models to fly for 45 minutes or more on rubber power alone - many flew out of site, and it became common practice to write your name, address and phone number on the covering tissue. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.
