Revell SMS Seeadler (Sea Eagle) German WWI Commerce Raider, 1/232, H382-298

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

Rare 1960 hardbox first issue with great John Steel artwork. It even contains a factory-wrapped original small, very colorful metal tube of "S" glue. This is a kit of a fantastic subject -the famous WWI sailing commerce raider of Count Felix Von Luckner. Very well detailed kit for that time. Full hull kit is molded in gray, brown and black and includes rigging thread and full rigging instructions. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes flags and instructions. The SMS Seeadler was a unique WWI raider in that it was not designed to elude the British blockade and break out to sea...it was designed to pass right through the blockade within full view of the British before attacking allied shipping around the world. No detail was overlooked in the Seeadler's preparation, right down to a Norwegian-speaking crew. The plan went perfectly - and the Seeadler passed inspection at the British Blockade. Her non-threatening appearance helped her in an active and colorful raiding career that nearly went around the world. I highly recommend reading any of several books that you can find about this ship. Von Luckner himself became quite a celebrity for his exciting exploits.

The Pamir was bulit in 1905 at Blohm & Voss shipyards to become the 51st ship in the fleet of R.F. Laeisz of Hamberg ("The Flying P Line" was a reference to the starting letter of most of the ships names and the numerous records that they held). She was a four masted barque of 4425 tons with a crew of 33. She saw extensive trade service between the wars and served in both World Wars. After WWI she was given away as compensation; however her original owner bought her back in the 1920s. Before WWI she was sold to a Finnish cereal shipping fleet. Her beauty saved her from torpedoes from a Japanese Submarine - the Commander simply could not sink so wonderful a ship. In her 40th year of existence, the Pamir was bought with the Passat by a Dutch demolition crew. Yet at the last moment the West German merchant marine bought both ships to train cadets in the 1950s. During one such training trip, the Pamir was lost under mysterious circumstances in an Atlantic storm in 1957.
