Charmore Lockheed XF-90, 1/90

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

Very rare kit for the advanced collector. Charmore was located at 126 Market Street in Paterson New Jersey. They issued a small line of kits in the early 1950s, at the dawn of US plastic kit production. All boxes have the same art - the name of the kit stamped on a side white panel. Inside, the kit has never been started. The contents are mint and complete in the original Charmore paper sacks. The main parts are the correct silver, while the canopy, stand and stand arm are clear. Includes decals and instructions. From toy historians, we know that Charmore was created by the toy giant Louis Marx Company after 1945. Evidently Marx hope to obtain retail buyer-level advantages and tax breaks from the arrangement. The company was named for Louis' brother's (David) wife, Charlene. It has been shown that Charmore and Marx mixed molds and products when it came to toys; however, it seems that the model lines were separate. Please email me if you have more details.

UPC Airship R-100 with Mooring Mast (ex-Frog), 1/500, 5040-500

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed VG

Sold

Still factory sealed but the seal has splits. UPC (Universal Power Master)from quality Frog molds. Rare and excellent kit. Features a large Montreal Mooring Mast and detailed airship with clear engine pods and passenger gondola. The model includes a clever set of metal rods that allows the airship to be displayed 'floating' in mid-air from the mooring mast. R-100 measures about 17 inches long. The R-100 was built by a Vickers Subsidiary. The famous Barnes Wallis worked on her design, which lead to the innovative geodesic airframe used for the Wellington and two other aircraft. The R-100 made a successful Transatlantic flight. Although there were issues, the design was sound. However, the government-built R-101 was not as soundly engineered and crashed on her maiden voyage, forever bringing an end to the Airship in the British Isles. The R-100 was sold for scrap and R-102 was never built. UPC stood for Universal Powermaster Corporation which was based out of New York City, NY. UPC did not cut their own molds, but bought kits already molded from other manufacturers and re-boxed the kits in the USA. Scott Eidson, the famous artist best known for his artwork with Revell, also did almost all the UPC box art in the 1960s, but this kit is unusual in that it kept the Frog Green series artwork. All UPC production ended in the 1970s.

Pyro Portuguese Man-O-War Santa Catarina do Monte Sinai - Flagship of Vasco de Gama, 1/200, P209-400

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Very rare Larger-scale hardbox issue from 1966. There are only two 15th century war carrack ships that have made into plastic models - this one and the Henri Grace a Dieu, also by Pyro. Pyro had a tendency to produce historically significant models regardless of the popularity. I am thankful today that Pyro made these kits, but in the long run this practice did not help them, and they eventually sold out their side of the kit business to Life-Like. The Portuguese carrack Santa Catarina do Monte Sinai was launched in 1520. She had the typical higher-castled construction and carried 140 cannons. In 1523 she was the flagship of the famous Vasco da Gama. The kit is well detailed and molded and included pre-formed ratlines and billowing sails. The model measures about 14-15 inches long when assembled. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions.

Aurora Aero Commander, 1/81, 285-50

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc++

Sold

The Aero Commander was a state-of-the-art twin engine light transport from the early 1960s. It was built by Aero Design and Engineering Co. of Bethany, Oklahoma. It was the first twin engine aircraft to be used by the President of the United States and served in this capacity in the early 1960s. This high performance 5 to 7 place was popular with business travelers and had a range of 1,050 miles and a ceiling of 22,000 feet. The Aero Commander led to the Jet Commander, which became the IAI 1121 through 1124 Westwind business jets. Aero Commanders can still be seen at some airports in excellent condition, but many are neglected as newer aircraft are in favor.

Eventually around 144 were made for the US Navy and they served till the end of WWI in training squadrons. Esoteric was known for making perhaps the finest vacuform kits. The moldings are crisp and have fine recessed detail - better than many injection molded kits. Every part needed to complete the kit is included down to the interior. Cleveland Baby Playboy Gas Model Balsa Flying Model Airplane Kit, GP-5008

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

33 inch wingspan for Class 'A' powered gasoline free-flight events. Cleveland entered the 1930s gas model market with the famous Playboy series. The design is so solid and popular that it is still a favorite at meets today (Like SAM - Society of Antique Modelers) where free-flight competition exist. Cleveland was late to introduce these kits (1939), but they wanted to ensure that the quality and performance was there. It appears that there were three aircraft in the Playboy line - the Baby, Junior and Senior. The model has not been started and is in exceptional condition. It comes from a long-time flying aircraft collection. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot’s English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh’s 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called “The Aviation Craze” that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh’s flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream – to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world’s longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business – Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called ‘Aviation’s great Recruiter – Cleveland’s Ed Packard’ by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.
