Sterling P-51D Mustang - 24 inch Wingspan for RC - Drops Twin Bombs in Flight, A13-398

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

24 inch wingspan kit for RC, free flight or control line. Includes innovative system for automatically dropping twin wing mounted bombs in flight. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occured in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be deluxe kits as they featured color decals, high-grade die cut balsa, vacuform plastic detail parts, plastic wheels (if required), finished wire landing gear, rubber motor and plastic prop, full size plans with instruction details and full instructions for conversion to RC or control line. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.

CZ Model North American N-17 / NAV-4 Navion Metal Covered Solid Model, 1/31

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Very close to 1/32 scale. 1940s issue when the original manufacture of the Navion, North American, was still producing the aircraft for the military and civil markets. The rights were later sold to Ryan. When aircraft modeling became popular in the 1930s, most builders made flying models. However, there were a measurable percentage of hobbyist who insisted on making static (called 'solid' models) scale models with the maximum amount of detail in the best tradition of ship modelers. The kits they used to practice their art were basic. Many times the kit consisted of blocks of wood and plans - the famous "Make Wood Look Like Airplane" kits from the 1930 and 1940s. This did not stop them from producing magnificent works of art, many of which are in museums around the world. The more deluxe kits, such as this CZ Model Airplane Company example, came with all parts cut in 3D profile, a host of smaller details and in this case rivet embossed aluminum sheet precut to cover the model! A very innovative kit, but certainly not easy to assemble. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions.

Micro Models The 1940 Sailplane (Reproduction) - 36 inch Wingspan Free Flight Balsa Airplane Model, 6/13, F109

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc++

Sold

This is a reproduction of the classic and revolutionary Carl Goldberg design and is roughly half the size of the original Sailplane. It includes full size plans, pre-cut parts and is authentically scaled from the original design. This model came from the estate of a very active and particular early aircraft kit collector. It is like factory-new inside and has not been started. Complete with all parts, plans and decals (if originally included). Designed for 'Sniffing Thermals', the honored pastime of a generation of model enthusiasts. Flying model aircraft predated powered flight; however, balsa wood and printwood were not introduced until the early 1930s and the hobby took off, as well as the hunt for thermals. Gas flight began in the early 1930s, and powered models (most all driven by Brown engines) took home so many awards that they were forever separated in competition from rubber powered models. Design of gas models was tricky since RC (radio control) models could not yet be applied to the mass market; so a gas model had to not only fly and climb under power, but then glide sufficiently - all in a stable fashion and without any operator inputs once the airplane took off.
