The Albatross was the primary sea rescue aircraft of the Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service, a branch of MAC - Military Airlift Command. Operational service began in 1947 and Hu-16s saw wartime action in Vietnam. Many finished their careers in the Coast Guard.

Early issue scale flying wooden rubber powered model from the early 1950s. Can be rubber, CO2 or small gas engine powered. Very nicely detailed pre-fabricated kit with completely finished parts, Monofoil wing, cut out fuselage, plastic cowl and prop, detailed instructions and plans and more. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete with instructions. NOTE: instructions are graded 'good'. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These 'Make Wood Blocks Look Like Plane' models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. The original 'Speedee-Bilt' kits, such as this one, were in one-piece two-color boxes. In the early 1950s, shortly before plastic kits were available, Monogram changed to the 'hardbox' with a lithographic slick glued to the top as this kit. Speedee-Bilt kits contained die cut and pre painted wooden parts, completely formed airfoil wings, carved wheels and numerous plastic details like cowling, pilot, missiles, prop and more. Assembly was by detailed full size plans.

Rare US Navy prototype F-4 Phantom kit in 1/48 scale. The fantastic Jo Kotula artwork is dated 1962, but the lack of a 'Famous Fighters' in the logo border probably dates this from 1963/4. Nicely done, large 1/48 scale kit with good detail for this early date. Features full landing gear, good cockpit detail, four AIM-7 Sparrow missiles, clear 'Triangle World' display stand, decals for the aircraft shown on the box art and a tiny 1.5 inch long scale model of the F-4 Phantom. Hard-to find kit of the old Japanese Naval Training Ship. The two sister ships were built in Kobe and launched in 1930. They were both steel four-masted barques carrying royals over double top and topgallant sails. They served as school ships for the Japanese merchant marine. After WWII, they carried demobilized soldiers home, and up to 1951 made dozens of trips to Asia and the Pacific. In 1952, they worked to collect the remains of Japanese war dead from the South Pacific. The ships were replaced in 1989. Very nicely detailed kit in large 1/200 scale. The assembled kit measures about 19 inches long when built. Molded in white, yellow and brown and includes extensive vacuform sails. The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.

This is one of Renewal's famous Aeroskin kits, and a rare large one in 1/48. Features markings of the famous aircraft of Max Immelmann. The model has an injection molded inner structure of ribs and stringers like a real aircraft, then the modeler covers it with provided authentic pre-colored Aeroskin fabric. There is no painting needed as elaborate finishes are printed directly on the Aeroskin covering. This results a very realistic and colorful model. The kit has never been started. LV917-C was a Halifax operated by 158 Squadron that completed 100 operational missions and survived the war. Only one other Halifax had more missions, 'LV917-E 'Friday the Thirteenth', also of 158. NOTE: the inside of one gun turret tub is neatly painted zinc chromate green. There is no other painting and no assembly at all. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.

Frog Junkers Ju-88A-4 - Green Series, 1/72, F160

Green Series issue with a desperate box art scene. Ground crew flee for their lives as Typhoons lob rockets into an airfield of gassed and about-to-be armed bombers. Well detailed and molded. Has 74 parts including separately molded ailerons, elevators and rudder. This kit has never been started. It is either still in the internally sealed factory bag or has been inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Frog is considered the father of injection molded model kits. The Lines Brothers opened Frog in 1932, capitalizing on the fever caused by Lindberg's solo transatlantic flight. Almost overnight the western populations became 'Air-Minded', and anything aviation was in high demand. Frog created a quality line of stick and tissue rubber powered aircraft and gliders as well as innovative ready-to-fly rubber powered aircraft that required no assembly. The box even contained a built-in rubber motor winder and fuselage holder. Model airplane flight competitions were popular in Great Britain, and one category was 'Rise Off the Ground', or ROG. By changing this to 'Flies Right Off the Ground', the FROG name was born. In 1936 Frog created a line of injection molded plastic models, the first such kit line in the world (Hawk sold a line of injection molded aircraft models in 1934 but they were factory assembled and painted). Named 'Penguin' after the bird that does not fly, the kits were innovative beyond the means of production. At a time when models were simply built by wingspan, the Penguin line was a constant 1/72 scale. Furthermore, a large 1/72 Short S.30 Empire class flying boat contained a full interior and lights! A line of accessories such as AA guns, tractors, hanger, ambulance, sound locator, searchlights and lighting kits were quickly added to the line. WWII caused a pause in production. After the war the box color changed from silver to green, and Penguin kits were also marketed in the USA. Production ended in 1950. Frog quickly expanded and released the Red, Orange, Black, Green, Gold Token, Spin and Comet series as well as Trail Blazers and several others. It is noteworthy that while most manufacturers in the 1940s/50 were making toy-like models, Frog attempted to make very realistic models. For example, 'detailing' kits with excessively large rivets was once very popular. Frog ignored this trend and continued to mold aircraft with fine panel lines and no rivets. As a result, Frog kits can be built into very realistic replicas. Production ended in the late 1970s, but Frog molds are still in use around the world.
