Athearn Southern Pacific Lines 'Overnight' 40 Foot Box Car - Metal HO Craftsman Kit - Bagged, 1/87, 4-228

Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed

Sold

Still factory sealed. In the late 1940s/early 1950s there was a revolution in model railroading: high quality kits became available for the first time. Before this, there were few standard gauges and most railroads were scratch built to any gauge the collector desired. This kit is the Menzies reissue of the classic Athearn kit. These kits build very realistic models because parts that are metal on the real box car are metal in the kit; same for the wooden parts. All sides, doors and roof are fully decorated, leaving very little painting. Includes wooden floor, opening doors, metal underside and detail fittings such as AB brake set, brake wheel, etc. These make great stand alone models or high-quality rolling stock for your line.

The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including instructions. Fred Megow was a famous pioneer in the model aircraft field from the late 1920s and a very early manufacture for HO scale trains in the 1930s. His product lines of semi-prefabricated, solid and stick and tissue kits won him national and extensive world wide distribution - possibly the first modern model manufacture to achieve this. His fascinating story involves trying novel and untested marketing ideas in the Great Depression, followed my explosive world-wide growth. Mr. Megow was a true pioneer in the early days of modeling and a leader in the low price field so that every boy could afford a kit during those difficult times. Megow also produced scale operating train and trackside kits, ship models (large and small) and automotive subjects. Megow's catalogs claim that they were pioneers in HO scale, and there is documentation to support this fact. Megow's early HO train kits served not only to promote this now-popular scale nationally, but were among the very first train kits. Model train kits were responsible for the explosion in model railroad popularity in the late 1930s - please see the article in this website about these kits.

Varney P.F.E (Pacific Fruit Express) 40' Wood Refrigerator (Reefer) Car - Wood and Metal HO Scale Train Kit, HO, R-4

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc++

Sold

Varney was one of the most known names in early HO model railroading. Gordon Varney was visionary in early business years. When HO was just gaining in popularity in the late 1930s, Varney sold all of his successful 'O' gauge moldings and casting to concentrate exclusively on HO gauge. Judging from the style of kit, this one is from the 1930s. Features very neatly precut and shaped roof, floor board and ends cut to final shape, other stripwood as needed, metal ladders and fittings, some very early style injection molded parts (such as ice hatches), other metal parts and stock as needed, very colorful and highly detailed embossed car sides done in bright orange PFE with the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific logos (correct for this car and kit), and brown embossed car ends. There is a sealed bag that contains the freight car trucks and the small parts are still factory sealed as well. The kit has not been started. Most parts are still sealed and all others have been inventoried complete. The plans are excellent and include instructions. The car sides and end are in as-new condition.
