Revell Midway Class Carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt - Pre 'S' First issue with Early Instructions, 1/547, H307-249

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Original Pre 'S' release and the true first issue. When Revell designed the model, information reached the man designing the instructions that there was a yardarm on the main mast - part #28. The mold cutter or designer either forgot about this part or never got word - and the molds were cut without. Revell used a grease pencil to mark off #28 from the parts list on the kits - new instructions were on the way, but they wanted to use up the old batch first. Later issues do not list this part or show it on the assembly diagram. Revell's first aircraft carrier model from 1954. Excellent kit of a straight-deck Midway class ship in the near original configuration. Features heavy AA battery and an airwing of F4U Corsairs, F9F Cougars, AD-6 Skyraiders and a helicopter that may be a HUP. Has correct hardbox in very good condition. Inside, the kit is molded in the correct glossy light gray plastic. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals, flags and instructions.

1969 issue. The Yorktown was one of three prewar sister carriers with Enterprise (CV-6) and Hornet (CV-8). The Yorktown saw extensive action in the Coral Sea, the first sea battle in which opposing forces did not sight each other from warships. At Midway she fought alongside Enterprise and Hornet, but was lost after the battle in an epic struggle to save the ship. Very nicely molded model. Features 20" long full hull with rudder and propeller detail, internal hangar deck sections that are visible through side hangar doors after, 20 Douglas SBD Dauntless airwing (well molded with raised panel lines and propellers), movable cranes, separately molded AA guns and catwalks and optional position elevators. Hobby House Sikorsky XR-5 Flying Helicopter - 26 inch Rotor Diameter, 1/22

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Very rare. From 1945. The box top says 'Precision Detail Flying Scale Helicopter With Everything Needed To Build And Fly - Makes A Real Miniature Craft - Hovers - Climbs - Flies Forward, Backward, Sideways, Indoor or Outdoor.' From the looks of the instructions, this is true but the builder would need to be talented! This is a very complicated true-scale stick-and-tissue model that is rubber powered with operating main and tail rotors. The kit is very complete and consists of balsa printwood, pre-cut balsa main rotors, balsa stock as required, printed plywood, turned pulleys and cord for drive system, metal hardware and metal stock, fully formed main and nose wheels, covering material, clear cockpit covering material, factory glass bottles of glue and shellac (dried up), rubber band motor (dried and cracked) and huge, highly detailed plans with comprehensive text instructions. The body of the XR-5 measures 21 inches long and has excellent detail for that time; it could be built for static display. But the patented operating system (by Professor T.N. De Bobovsky) is amazing. The model utilizes a removable motor stick and remote starter pin. The rear half of the helicopter disconnects from the front half at two plywood bulkheads to allow removal and installation of the motor. Power is transferred from the motor to a shaft, which is in turn wrapped in a strong cord. Through two pulleys, the main rotor turns. The tail rotor is driven by a separate string attached to a pulley (of a different diameter) on the main rotor drive shaft. This drives the tail rotor (with 2 more pulleys) at the proper speed to produce straight flight. The entire main rotor mechanism is adjustable so you can climb, hover, go forwards or backwards, etc. The plans contain extensive detailed text instructions as well as full size drawings, dozens of detailed drawings (main of the mechanism) and extensive text describing the mechanism as well. This was clearly a very well-thought out kit and would provide a challenge for even the most experienced wooden kit modeler! The kit has never been started and has been inventoried complete with all parts and plans. I believe I was the first person to unfold the plans; they are in 'excellent++' condition with very minor wear and yellowing. The box has a short, illustrated history of the Helicopter on the front of the box. Hobby House was out of New York City. Little is known about them but they also made a very similar flying kit of the beautiful Higgins EB-1.

Still factory sealed. Well molded kit. Has markings for US Navy VS-21 and JSDF. Kit features cockpit detail, retractable radome, optional position landing gear and rotating props. Over 1000 Trackers were completed for the Navy as carrier-based submarine hunters. Grumman was awarded the contract in 1950, and in 1952 the first XS2F-1 flew. The large belly radome contained the PAS-38 search radar and the ASQ-10 MAD detector was in the tail. ALD-3 ECM performed DF (direction finding) duties, and the 70 million candle power spotlight lit up targets at night. Sonobuoys were held in both engine nacelles and offensive weapons included acoustic torpedoes, depth charges, rockets and conventional bombs. Trackers saw service in several other Navies including Canada.
