George Bouton produded a 1/3 HP engine that could run at 1800 rpm- double the speed of the Daimler unit. The De Dion/Bouton unit proved to be much more efficient. Mr. Benz, Daimler's engine expert, found out about the motor and announced that it would only have a service life of one-third that of a 500 rpm engine. Benz was wrong and many De Dion/Bouton engines are still running today. At first they built powered tricycles with this engine and produced motor for other manufacturers. The De Dion Bouton 4-wheel automobiles represented here is the Type G. The water-cooled engine put out 4.5 hp. It may have been the first easy-to-drive car built, due to thbe constand mesh gear system and the famous 'de Dion axle' which is still used by some sports car manufacturers. The top speed of the G was 26 mph. Although it was not recognized at the time, the Type G was the first 'peoples compact car' as it brought affordable motoring to thousands at a time when cars were expensive playthings for the rich.
