Pyro Chesapeake Bay Skipjack Oyster Boat 'Carrie Price', 1/60, C269-100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

From the very early 1960s. An excellent kit for that time. Features full hull, optional position keel, optional position cabin and deck hatch if you wish to super-detail the insides, full deck fittings, two detailed small boats, railings and life rings, furled sails (as shown on box art) and an excellent un-retouched photograph of the finished model that serves as a rigging diagram. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions. The skipjack 'Carrie Price' is an exact replica of a typical small sailing vessel used along the Chesapeake Bay area to dredge for oysters. The center keel stabilizer could be pulled up for working in very shallow water. Until 1942 sail was the only power permitted for oyster dredging; after 1942 the state passed a law allowing power boats to be used. This lead to almost all the skipjacks being converted to power and having the main mast cut down. Although it's days are past, many yachtsmen restore and sail this beautiful small craft today. Pyro is long out of the plastic model business but is famous today for the esoteric collection of kits they produced. The seemed to care little about popularity but designed kits based on historical significance or local interest. The quality of the kits is generally high. Please the read the articles about Pyro Kit History and Pyro's founder, who was a pioneer in modern injection molding. Both are located on this website.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

1952 early issue molded in bright red plastic. This is from the issues produced by Gowland & Gowland as it carries their 'balloon' logo on the side. These issues features the same 5 car artwork on every box; the only way to identify the contents was an ink-stamped name on the box ends. This kit has never been started. All parts are still sealed in the factory bag. Includes instructions. These kits have a fascinating history. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream and never made the top 10 list of boys activities. Spurred on by the nation-wide aviation craze in the 1920s, many became modelers and built flying or static wooden models of airplanes, ships, trains, automotive and other subjects. Basic kits existed, but many of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s when the Gowland & Gowland/Revell Highway Pioneers became the sales sensation of the year. Demand was so great that the factories could not keep up and almost overnight 'model building' was mainstream. The phenomenon of the 'Highway Pioneers' kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles fit the bill: they could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real cars. The success of the Highway Pioneers lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the late 1950s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys...and many adult males too!

Revell Chuck Wagon with Three Figures and Four Animals - Miniature Masterpieces, 1/48, H507-98

Features full suspension, rear shelves, back fold-down deck, coffee pot, pot, lamp, bell, accessories, two horses, calf, dog, two men and full suspension detail. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions. The instructions are present and excellent. 'Miniature Masterpieces' was formed through an alliance of Lew Glaser (Revell) and Steve Adams (Adams Action Models) in 1953. Although the molds were made at Adams and it had the appearance of an independent company, the firm was run by Revell down to the prototypes being made at the Revell plant. Originally there was no evidence of the parent company on the surface. The State Coach of England was the first kit - without figures and horses, issued in 1953. More kits of excellent quality followed. Revell completely took over the line in 1954 and in that year and the next, kits were labeled 'Revell' with a 'Miniature Masterpiece' label on the box top also. 1954 advertisements from Revell list the complete line as the H506 State Coach of England, H510 Ranch Wagon, H503 Covered Wagon, H502 Marquis de Lafayette Carriage, H504 Roman Racing Chariot, H501 Wells Fargo Stage Coach, H509 Western Figures and H507 Chuck Wagon.

Revell 1913 Mercedes Highway Pioneers, 1/32, H54-89

NOTE: missing two headlight lenses. Inventoried with all other parts with instructions. These two parts were green; I have included enough clear material to duplicate for realistic lenses. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects.
