USA early issue hardbox with great color and gloss, dated 1963. Very well detailed for that time and includes 'Secret bomb.' Features specially modified Lancaster fuselage with Dam Buster bomb and release mechanism. Landing gear retracts, props and wheels turns and control surfaces move. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The Dam Busters squadron was famous for its daring raids on three German dams on May 16, 1943. Carrying the special Barnes Wallis-designed bombs, the Lancasters flew very low over the water in the face of heavy flak to drop the rotating bombs perfectly. Many did not return. The bombs did perform as promised, first skipping over the water, hitting the dam, then rolling down 30 feet before exploding with tremendous force. In an airburst, these bombs would not have damaged the dams, but since water is incompressible, the dams were breached.

Copyright dated 1960 hardbox issue in investment-grade 'Near Mint' condition. Purchased new on August 30, 1966 at S. S. Kresge in Cleveland, Ohio. This classic kit is a reissue of the 'S' kit from the 1950s, and is one of the last issues to include the fuel truck and engine check stand with ground crew member. The box has perfect color and gloss, no price tags or tag marks, four perfectly solid, original corners and no creasing. Very, very light wear and yellow marks from the original Revell tape are the only flaw. Molded in the correct gloss silver and clear. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions.

Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling's offering to be 'deluxe' compared to other manufacturers.
