Sterling Golden Hind - 9.75 inch long Solid Wood Ship Kit with Cloth Sails and Metal Fittings, G5

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

In the late 1970s/early 1980s Sterling issued these simplified wood kits for beginners. They included a completely carved hull with very little sanding needed to complete. Also included are full size plans, two sheets of printwood, fully shaped wooden parts, numerous cast metal fittings, pre-cut blocks, hardwood dowels, instructions, standing and running rigging line, rigging diagrams, printed cloth sails and a large, colorful decal sheet. I remember building some of these - it was an ideal project for someone who had never built a solid wooden kit but wanted the experience. The kit has never been started. The fittings bag was sealed but it split while I was inspecting it - I have sealed it in a ziplock. The other parts that were never factory sealed have been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions.

Comet Fokker D-VIII Struct-O-Speed - 9.3 Inch Wingspan Flying Airplane, 2105-29

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

From the 1960s. Comet would advertise that the Struct-O-Speed series 'Puts Itself Together...That Quick!' on the box top, and it was not a completely idle boast. These kits were very highly prefabricated for their time, and in comparison to the regular stick and tissue models, the claim is not unfounded. Kit features all die cut balsa wood parts, formed and finished wheels, wood prop, insignia (on the plans) and full, illustrated instructions. Complete and never started. At the time this kit was made, the entire '2100' series (as Comet called it) consisted of 2101 Piper Cub, 2102 Taylorcraft, 2103 Stinson Voyager, 2104 Cessna, 2105 Fokker DVIII, 2106 Beech Bonanza, 2107 Ryan Navion, 2108 Globe Swift and 2109 F-51 Mustang. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Guillows Sopwith Camel - 18 inch Wingspan Rubber Powered Balsa Wood Kit, WW-6

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed NM

Sold

Still factory sealed. Purchased new in 1965. One of a very popular line of World War 1 flying aircraft stick and tissue kits with 18 inch wingspan. Kit features scale plastic wheels, plastic propeller, light vacuform nose cowl, die cut balsa parts, colored tissue, rubber motor and full decals. Includes full size detailed plans. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.
