Revell Documented Arizona Factory Display Owned By Esther Ross, Who Christened The USS Arizona

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$3800

An incredibly rare, documented, one-of-a-kind piece of history in amazing investment-grade collector condition. For the very advanced collector of unique military history and model kits. This Revell Factory Model was originally owned by Mrs. Esther Ross Wassell, who earlier was Miss Esther Ross who christened the USS Arizona in New York on June 19, 1915. She went on to play a very key role in the creation of the USS Arizona Memorial. Thanks to newspaper reports, we know that her father, William Ross, was a prominent pharmacist in Prescott, Arizona. He and his friends convinced Gov. Hunt to choose his daughter from the other 100 applicants anxious to do the honors. It turned out to be a wise choice reasons no one could foresee. Miss Ross took the task of launching the world's most powerful battleship very seriously. She practiced her duties every day after school for months, smashing syrup bottles full of water against a fence behind the house. Miss Ross was popular and well respected in Prescott. Even the Associated Press reported that she "was one of the prettiest girls in the state." A special train took Gov. Hunt, Miss Ross, her family and others to New York for the event. Although the applause for the then unpopular Gov. Hunt, the cheering for Miss Ross was "heard for miles." Page 1 of the Prescott Journal Miner, June 20th, 1915, reported that at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Miss Ross cried "I dub thee Arizona," and "Not a hitch or sign of accident marred the success of the launching." "This is the proudest moment of my life," she stated, "and I am most intensely gratified at the magnificent demonstration that my friends and the city of Prescott has given me." Sometime after the launching ceremony, Miss Ross married Mr. Arthur Wassell and became Mrs. Esther Ross Wassell. She saw the horror of World War II and the disaster of the Arizona touched her deeply. After the war, she joined the drive to create a memorial over the ship to the 1177 sailors entombed in her. She joined the Arizona Memorial Committee which raised all the funds needed to build the Arizona Memorial. She served on the staff and toured the USA giving numerous media interviews and key speeches for the fund raising. Out of gratitude, the USS Arizona Memorial Committee ordered a special Revell Factory Display USS Arizona for her. It came with two specially affixed small Fleet Reserve and Arizona Committee signs (shown in the photos) on the right side; these special markings are only found on the rare "appreciation gift" factory displays from the Arizona Memorial Committee members to important fundraisers. The model was shipped to her in Los Angeles. You can see the original "Arizona Memorial Committee" mailing label that has her full name and address, documenting that it was her model. Esther treasured this gift and kept it in remarkable and very complete condition. Included is the original shipping box in "very good++" condition with all the original shipping tape, all the original internal special cardboard packing material, the model ship in exceptional condition, the cardboard display base(complete but with small tears and very light wear as shown), the colorful backdrop (with wear and slight tears as shown, missing one lower tab), the original display assembly instructions and even an original fund raising card from the Arizona memorial campaign. This display, box and all materials were always in a climate controlled environment. The colors on the cardboard display are in stunning, factory-new condition. The instructions for the display are 'excellent.' The ship is 100% complete and the factory paint is in exceptional condition. Even the factory rigging and all flags are intact. There is very little dust on the ship; it appears to be in 'not displayed' condition; but I know it was displayed for a short time because of the small tears and one tab on the cardboard display backdrop (see photos), which were probably due to putting it up and taking it down. I have only found one repair; the jackstaff broke and was neatly repaired at some point. The factory shipping box still has all the original tape and very little wear for that age. The original Arizona Memorial Committee shipping label is in 'very good' shape. Due to it being on the bottom of the shipping box, it does have some wear, but all the writing can be clearly read with slight magnification. This piece passed to Esther's daughter, who gave it to a friend who then gave it to another friend. The later friend is wife to an OMK customer, who sold me the model. This kit must be shipped insured and I may require it shipped by special courier.

Multimedia Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$565

Pocher made the finest automobile models ever created. The detail and working parts on these long out-of-production, big 1/8 scale kits is amazing. Recommended for experienced modelers only. This kit is a perfect reproduction of the original car that won 1st place at the 1907 Grand Prix de France with an average of 113.612 KPH with Felice Nazzaro as the pilot. The prototype of this car was used with the original drawings to create this model. It has 823 parts of plastic, brass, steel, leather, iron, rubber, copper, aluminum and other materials. Features include super detailed engine, opening hood, complete interior, all pilot controls, operating steering, working suspension, operating steel drive chains and more. Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Good

$545

This is a factory-sealed case of 12 Hobby-XV-3 model kits from the 1950s. Hobby-Time shipped them to the address on the box, and I purchased them from the man at that address. The case has never been opened and is still securely sealed top and bottom with the factory tape. The box is in 'excellent' condition. The actual model kits (12 inside the case!) are the one and only issue of this amazing aircraft. Pyro 1909 Lozier Briarcliff - Vintage Brass Car Series, 1/32, C455-125

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

$42

1967 Pyro issue from original molds. In the early to mid 1960s the Pyro company chose many of the kit subjects based more on historical significance than popularity. Luckily for us, Pyro not only made these kits but did an excellent job for the time. The Lozier was a large four cylinder T-Head rated at 45 horsepower. The wheelbase was 124 inches and she rode on huge 36 x 4.5 tires. This Pyro car model is based on a car that was owned by Thomas J Lester of Chargin Falls, Ohio that Pyro engineers and designers had access to. The model includes rubber tires, brass plated parts, colored injection molded parts and clear parts. Features detailed chassis, complete motor and interior and a removable hood. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including instructions.

Megow The Cadet 51.5 Inch Wingspan Early Gas Free Flight Aircraft, E-17

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

$425

Very, very rare. From the early 1930s. Notice that the motor is referred to simply as 5/8" bored engine. There is no record of a public sale of this kit since the mid 1990s and no public photo of one until now. It is safe to say that only a handful are left. Fred Megow once stated that they lost money on the big gas models (like this Cadet) and sold very few; they were done for status only. The box top and tray are in exceptional condition given the age of the model. The box top and litho are both 100% intact, although the corners are taped due to splits and the litho has stains as shown. The tray is better with no splits. This is an incredible kit for that time with a high degree of prefabrication- "Can Be Built In A Few Evenings!" at the box says and it is true. Features ready-carved, completed hollow wing leading edges from a single block of balsa, conical monocoque fuselage, universally acceptable motor mounting, special wing mounting that protects the model (the wing will fly off loose undamaged in case of a collision), realistic cabin, high aspect ratio, solid, factory cut tail, high quality printwood, spars, stripwood and sheet wood, balsa blocks as required, metal stock, finished rubber tires with wooden hubs, the original paper envelope including all hardware, embossed and outlined aluminum sheet including lower, top and nose cowls, beautiful fuselage-length 'CADET' insignia in black and silver, covering material, huge, detailed plans and even a four page, illustrated brochure by Maxwell B. Bassett (Pioneer Gas Model Builder and Designer) called 'Flying Gasoline Powered Models.' Even the original cardboard dividers and inserts are present. There is no assembly but NOTE: 20 wing ribs are cut out to 'professional' quality. All other parts are uncut. Carefully inventoried and NOTE: missing the prop blank and fluids. The factory rubber bands disintegrated. Otherwise includes all other items, insignia and paperwork.

Berkeley Impulse Pylon Racer - for R/C, 16-5

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+++

$139

Designed for RC. 45 inch wingspan. Features metal hardware, formed wire landing gear, full size detailed plans, shaped leading and trailing edges and more. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. Berkeley is a very famous manufacturer of flying model kits from the Golden Age of flying aviation, about 1932-1954. Founded in 1933 by William Effinger, the company was quite progressive in producing quality kits - it was likely the Berkeley 'Buccaneer' was the first gas powered model in kit form. In the later 1930s, Effinger acquired the services of a very talented Henry Struck. Struck went on to design numerous award-winning kits under the Berkeley name. Berkeley weathered the post WWII recession and emerged as a major kit producer in the late 1940 and 1950s. These were great years for Berkeley and they produced some incredible and large kits. The company went bankrupt in about 1960 however. Fox engines (Duke Fox) bought the company and released the kits alongside his own FOX models and engines. This arrangement did not last, and in the early 1960s the Berkeley name disappeared from hobby shop shelves.

Cleveland 1930 Howard Pete Racer - Balsa Flying Aircraft, 1/16, SF18

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

$125

Dated 1933 on the plans. This model came from a long-time collector who purchased this model new in October of 1955 from Cleveland direct. It was even factory-packed with pages of the newspaper "Cleveland Plain Dealer" dated June 29, 1955. This is a 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, sheet wood, pre-drilled nose block, fully finished spinner, thrust button & wheels, metal stock, rigging material, completely formed prop blades, covering material, highest quality plans and more. The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with everything present. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called "The Aviation Craze" that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream- to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest running single-owner (77 years) model airplane business- Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviation's great Recruiter- Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.
