Monogram F-51D (P-51D) Mustang Action Model - Four Star Issue, 1/32, PA77-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Dated 1962. First issue of this classic 'Action Model' with great detail and mold quality. Features opening canopy to show the highly detailed cockpit, tiny levers under the wings drop 2 bombs, a small knob on the bottom rotates and extends and retracts the main gear and tailwheel; all gear doors including tailwheel open and close automatically with the gear. Not only do these features sound great, but they work. My built kit is over 40 years old and functions like new! Molded in silver, black and clear. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The decals are flat and 100% intact but NOTE: there are are light brown stains (age foxing) on the backing paper only. The actual transfers are clear. This kit has an interesting history. In 1961, Monogram introduced the 1/32 scale Phantom Mustang. This was a very ambitious project. The kit was transparent, highly detailed and included two electric motors. One motor raised and lowered the main gear and tail wheel while the other spun the prop. Two small levers on the base dropped bombs from the wings. It was molded in clear, silver, black, red and zinc chromate green. Although successful, the kit was expensive to produce and Monogram charged a hefty retail price of $4.98. As a way to create more revenue from the molds, Monogram cleverly created this kit - using some of the same molds as the Phantom Mustang. The silver parts tree was completely re-cut and does not match the Phantom version. The red stand, gears and motorizing features were simply left out and the model molded in solid colors. The gear retraction/extension features was retained, but not motorized. On the new silver parts tree they added a small knob (placed on the bottom of the wing) and the same for the bomb dropping mechanism. This lowered the price to $1.98 and this additional revenue hopefully helped pay down the original mold costs.

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Rare kit, probably from the late 1940s but the actual date is not known. Large scale model that is solid wood. Features 'Ray-Ring' fuselage, a novel and useful feature to make fuselage finishing easier. Instead of using template to shape the fuselage, the templates have already been used and at those locations the fuselage is already carved to final shape! You simply carve in between the pre-carved section until they match - a very nice idea. Also includes factory cut wings, fully finished wheels, clear vacuform canopy (known as the 'Ray-Closure') in excellent condition and not yellowed, very high quality printwood, full color insignia, very nice full size plans including building instructions. The kit has never been started and is complete. Ray Aircraft Products Co. was located in West Chester Pennsylvania. They mention this is the '5nd of the RAY SOLID MODELS'. The Hellcat was #2. Little else is known.

Guillows Fokker D-VIII Flying Razor - 18 Inch Wingspan Rubber Powered Aircraft, WW-9

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Kit features scale plastic wheels, plastic propeller, light vacuform nose cowl, die cut balsa parts, covering tissue, rubber motor and complete decals. Includes full-size, detailed plans. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.

From about 1973. Still factory sealed but the seal has drawn the box top concave as shown. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.
