Miniature Aircraft Grumman F3F-1 (F3F1) US Navy Fighter - 32 7/8 inch Wingspan Balsa Wood Aircraft Kit, 1/12

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Very rare. True 1/12 scale flying or display model kit from the 1930s or very early 1940. Miniature Aircraft was well known for turning out arguably the finest scale detailed models during this time - as their catalog says, 'The Worlds Finest Model Aircraft.' The kit cost near $4 when it was new- very expensive considering the most popular model aircraft were 10 cents. The limited production and sales have made all Miniature Aircraft kits rare and valuable today. The model has not been started. Includes all nine printed balsa sheets in 'near mint' condition, a perfectly-factory turned and carved nose, all spars, leading/training edges and strip stock, stock sheet wood, hardwood dowels, factory-sealed 'Banner Streamlight' real balloon tires with light metal hubs, metal wire, separate color fuselage and wing insignia, squadron markings and other insignia and instrument panel printed on the plans (black and white), clear celluloid for windshields (excellent and includes factory tissue protector), scale prop, turned wood thrust bearing, covering tissue and excellent, very large full size scale plans that included text instructions and a large number of detail drawings that leave nothing to chance. The plans are 'very good++' with typical yellowing and a few small edge tears but nothing major. The box top and bottom tray are all original and complete, but the box top has four split corners and clear tape on it along with other general wear and tear typical of a kit this old.

Tetra US Army Ordnance Highway Trailer Motorized (Semi Trailer Van 6 Ton), 1/32, 73

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Very rare scale kit of an usual subject. Includes the tractor, trailer and crew. From the early 1970s. Very well detailed with a large number of parts. Fully motorized, including the motor, metal hardware and gears/pinions. The kit has never been started. All parts are still factory sealed in 'Tetra Plastic Model' bags and from what I can tell, all parts are present. With two decal sheets. But NOTE: missing instructions! Tetra issued quite a line of 1/32 vehicles like this, including M-36 Cargo Truck, Highway Trailer and Semi (this kit), M-15 A-1 M-26 Heavy Trailer and Tractor and 45 Ton Transporter (tank transport trailer and truck). These were called the "US Army Ordnance Series." The kit was 800 Yen and made in Japan; the list constitutes the entire line, no other Tetra kits are known. These kits are all ex-Doyusha and may be 1/35 instead of the listed 1/32. Even the Doyusha issues of these kits are very rare.

Sterling Stearman PT-17 Kaydet Dusts Crops in Flight - 22 Inch Wingspan for R/C / Control Line / Free Flight, A2-249

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Purchased new on August 8, 1966 at Hobbyville in Cleveland, OH. Very nicely produced stick-and-tissue model that actually releases 'crop dust' in flight. Can be flown with rubber, electric or gas control line or converted to RC with modern lightweight systems. Features high quality die-cut balsa sheet parts, stripwood and spars, fully formed wire landing gear struts, finished wheels, other wood and metal stock as required, light plastic engine, exhaust and pilot bust, clear dual die-cut windscreens (still mint not yellowed), rubber motor, plastic prop, a big set of decals, covering tissue and excellent full size plans with detailed instructions. Never started and complete. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be deluxe kits as they had the action features and included everything needed to complete the model.

Airfix Boeing 314 Pan Am Clipper - 'Dixie' or BOAC 'Berwick', 1/144, 04172

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

Very finely molded and detailed kit for the time. Has decals for both aircraft. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. In the 1930s Pan Am was a household word in the USA for their romantic foreign routes and the glamorous 'China Clippers' that crossed the Pacific Ocean, stopping at such ports as Wake Island. Pan Am's attention soon turned to the Atlantic. Since non-stop service would be needed, a new aircraft was designed. The Boeing 314 was chosen. This huge flying boat started flying the Atlantic mail in 1939 with a trip over 26 hours long. Before the war, the 314 fleet flew the Pacific, Atlantic and other routes. The airliner was a palace compared to the cramped jets and limited service of today. The flight deck compared to the bridge of a ship and housed 6 crew. It was connected to the passenger cabin by a spiral staircase. The luxurious cabins were divided into 5 standard compartments, each seating 10 passengers, a dining salon for 14, a special compartment for four and a deluxe bridal suite. 74 could be carried on day trips and 40 when sleeping quarters for all passengers was required. Chefs prepared gourmet meals while passengers lounged in deeply cushioned wicker chairs and enjoyed a grand view of the scenery from about 5,000 feet. The age of the Clippers ended shortly after WWII when land planes could operate at much higher speeds than the flying boats.
