Comet Fokker D-VIII Struct-O-Speed - 14 inch Wingspan Flying Airplane, 2305-98

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

Purchased new in 1972 from National Hobby in Ohio. Comet would advertise that the Struct-O-Speed series 'Puts Itself Together...That Quick!' on the box top, and it was not a completely idle boast. These kits were very highly prefabricated for their time, and in comparison to the regular stick and tissue models, the claim is not unfounded. Kit features die cut wood that is factory painted, formed and finished wheels, plastic prop, rubber motor, decals and detailed instructions with flying tips. Complete and never started. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Aurora Rockwell 1121 Jet Commander, 1/72, 85-100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc++

Factory sealed. 1968 issue hardbox. Nicely detailed kit features recessed panel lines, full interior with rear bulkhead, couch, chairs and console, cockpit with chairs, instrument panel, control yokes, forward bulkhead and clear windows. Includes optional position landing gear and colorful decals. The Jet Commander was the jet powered follow-on to the famous Aero Commander twin private aircraft. But shortly after 1121 delivery began in 1965, Rockwell bought Aero Commander. The 1121 was competition for the Rockwell Sabreliner business jet in the same class, so Rockwell sold the Jet commander to IAI. Initial releases under IAI were called the 1123. Improvements to the 1123 design lead to the IAI 1124 Westwind powered by 731 fan engines. Legend has it that these molds were lost and/or destroyed in a train wreck. Monogram bought Aurora's molds and was transporting them to the Monogram factory when the accident happened.
