William H Low Co Two Horses and Boston Fire Department Style Harness - Wilo Line Fire Trucks, 1/24, F16

Multimedia Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Very rare. Likely from the 1940s. William H Low Co., of Braintree Mass., issued the 'Wilo Line' which included a superb series of antique commercial firefighting equipment. The scale is given as 1/2" (1/24). The kits were very advanced for the time and shared many of the pre-fabrication methods of Hudson Miniatures. These are the excellent horses, which are almost never seen. The animals are the correct scale for the equipment and come with a harness kit that used the Boston FD stand-by harness as the prototype. Includes detailed text instructions with excellent illustrations and even a painting guide for the harness equipment and the horse. The harness is still in the internal factory sealed bag and the horses are complete with instructions/plans. The kits in this line include Amoskeag Steamer, Hose Reel, Hose Wagon, Chemical Engine and others.

Maco Four Wheel Cab Over Engine Ladder Truck / Fire Engine, 1/24

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Very, very rare. Dated 1946. This is a fully-scale, highly detailed wooden kit that measures just shy of two feet long when assembled. The box top photo does show the actual built model but was slightly retouched. The kit has a very high degree of prefabrication; all wood blocks are fully factory carved and labeled for identification, ladder frames are cut and drilled for rungs, numerous parts are cut to shape, wheels are completely formed and there are many smaller parts that are fully carved to final shape. Kit materials consists of hardwood & plywood parts, one sheet of printed balsa parts (fenders, I believe), hardwood stock, clear for windows and a few metal parts. There are amazingly detailed full size plans that include side, top, front and back elevations, detail drawings for the operating ladders and more and detailed text instructions as well. The plans are in 'excellent' condition with slight edge wear and slight yellowing as the only flaws. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts to the best of my knowledge. Such a kit is difficult to inventory past the larger, labeled parts but it certainly appears to be complete. Little is known about Maco Model Company beyond the fact that it was located in California and made this kit in 1946.

Comet Aeronca K Struct-O-Speed - 15 inch Wingspan Flying Aircraft, Q3-29

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

Early 1950s issue flying model in the 'Coca-Cola' bottle box. Comet 'Struct-O-Speed' was created to dramatically reduce building time and allow you to fly your model faster. It worked on both counts. All parts are die cut - you build a cabin aircraft, not a profile. There is no tissue covering. It comes with quality balso parts, factory formed wire landing gear and wheels, a plastic prop and thrust bearing, rubber motor and excellent instructions. Never started and 100% complete. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Aurora N-156 Freedom Fighter (F-5A Tiger), 1/48, 140-98

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+++

Sold

1962 first issue with 98 cent price extension on the part number and 'Famous Fighters' in the box top oval sunburst Aurora logo. This was the the only year for this logo on this kit, making it the rarest of the issues. Features fantastic Jo Kotula box artwork. Kit includes pilot, cockpit and instrument panel, three drop tanks and early AIM-9 Sidewinder Air-to-Air Missiles. Molded in white and clear. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts decals and instructions. This kit is a very good representation of the rare 'Freedom Fighter' prototype N-156. It developed into the F-5, which was widely exported and saw service in over 30 countries. Only three of the N-156 prototypes were built. The design centered around two GE J85 turbojets which originally powered the ADM-20 Quail decoy carried by the B-52 fleet. Initially there seemed to be little demand until President Kennedy's Military Assistance Program required a low-cost fighter that could be provided to US Allies. The N-156 was easily the top choice. It was renamed the F-5 and the rest is history - it became one of the most widely used fighter/bombers in post-WWII history and is still in service in some air forces.
