Comet Vought F4U-1 Corsair - 20 inch Wingspan Flying Balsa Model Airplane - (F4U1), 3404-149

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

1970s reissue of the older kit. Kit features traditional wood/tissue construction, detailed full size plans, building instructions, hardware (if required), tissue and propeller. The kit has never been started. Inventoried complete including plans/instructions. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Revell Avro Lancaster Dam Buster - Japan Issue - RAF ED932/G - ED910/G - ED934/G - ED937/G, 1/72, H202

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+++

Sold

Rare 1974 Revell of Japan hardbox issue with dramatic artwork unique to this issue. Like most Revel of Japan issue, this one has decals for several aircraft - in this case, four. Kit is molded in black and clear and features movable elevators, ailerons and wing flaps, retractable landing gear, rotating turrets, wheels and props, crew of four, special fuselage for 'Dam Busters' configuration and special bomb. Never started. All parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags. Includes decals and instructions. The Dam Busters squadron was famous for its daring raids on three German dams on May 16, 1943. Carrying the special Barnes Wallis-designed bombs, the Lancasters flew very low over the water in the face of heavy flak to drop the rotating bombs perfectly. Many did not return. The bombs did perform as promised, first skipping over the water, hitting the dam, then rolling down 30 feet before exploding with tremendous force. In an airburst, these bombs would not have damaged the dams, but since water is incompressible, the dams were breached.

Hawk Supermarine S.6B (S-6B S6B) One Piece Box Issue, 1/48, 700

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

For the advanced model collector. This is a model kit with a fascinating history for it is among the early injection molded kits produced in the United States (please see the article about early USA kit production on this website). The Hawk model company was the most innovative in America and had been making constant 1/48 scale models in wood with metal accessories since the late 1920s. During the re-run of the World's Fair in 1933, Hawk may have made the world's first injection molded airplanes models - but they were not kits. The models were completely finished and were on display for the then-large sum of $25 each. The Mates brothers, who founded and ran Hawk, were quick to incorporate this new technology by replacing the metal detail parts with injection molded details to the wooden kits in the late 1930s. During the war, Hawk put it's injection molding knowledge to work making ID models for the US Armed Forces. Originally there was a nation-wide program to have children and adults make these from wood, but consistency was an issue - injection molded solved this problem. Immediately after WWII in 1946, Hawk made the Curtiss Racer model injection molded in black tenite. The box was a simple one-color affair. This may have been the first injection molded airplane kit produced in the USA; another contender is the Varney's PT-17. Both met a very cool reception at hobby shops. Hawk quickly changed the Curtiss box to two colors and added box artwork while molding the kit is bright yellow acetate. In 1947, Hawk approached toy stores since hobby shops were giving the kit poor promotion. The toy stores did much better. Spurred on by toy store sales in 1947, Hawk added four classic racers in 1948, all molded in acetate - the Gee Bee, Howard Ike, Laird Solution and the Supermarine S6B. Hawk made the switch to polystyrene in 1949. This kit is the one in polystyrene and is from @ 1949. The box is in very good condition with great colors. There is tape on both end flaps. The box has not been crushed, bent or flattened, which is unusual. These came in one-piece boxes and they are not very strong. Inside, the kit has never been started. The kit is 100% complete with all parts. The small parts are still sealed in the 'crinkle' bag. The instructions are in as-new condition. Please note that Hawk did not issue decals with this issue of this kit.

Hawk Grumman F9F Panther Flip Box Issue, 1/48, 400

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

Early rare Hawk kit. Hawk was active in manufacturing wooden kits and wooden kits with some injection molded details before all-injection molded kits came around. Among Hawk's early plastic kits were the F9F and F-90 in the flip top box. Oddly, the kits are more famous for the fact that Aurora purchased the F9F and F-90 and copied these molds to create their first two plastic kits. The earliest Hawk plastic kits were in these on-piece flip top boxes. The boxes proved fragile and were quickly replaced with sturdy two-piece boxes. This makes a flip-top box in excellent condition very rare - this is one of the finest that I have seen. Correctly molded in a beautiful medium blue with clear stand, stand arm, nose probe and canopy and olive drab pilot. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.

Airfix Blackburn NA 39 Buccaneer, 1/72, 384

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc+++

Sold

Still factory sealed. Type three box logo. The Buccaneer was the world's first purpose designed low level 'below the radar' bomber. Low level strike aircraft have a shorter airframe life limit due to the stresses of low level flying, so the Buccaneer was designed to be very strong and even had many sub-assemblies milled from solid metal. Kit features opening unique rotating bomb bay, folding wings and working arresting hook.
