Hawk Supermarine S6B, 1/48, 700

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair-

Sold

Very rare kit for the advanced collector. The Hawk model company was the most innovative in America and had been making constant 1/48 scale models in wood with metal accessories since the late 1920s. During the re-run of the World's Fair in 1933, Hawk may have made the world's first injection molded airplanes models - but they were not kits. The models were completely finished and were on display for the then-large sum of $25 each. The Mates brothers, who founded and ran Hawk, were quick to incorporate this new technology by replacing the metal detail parts with injection molded details to the wooden kits in the late 1930s. During the war, Hawk put it's injection molding knowledge to work making ID models for the US Armed Forces. Originally there was a nation-wide program to have children and adults make these from wood, but consistency was an issue - injection molded solved this problem. Immediately after WWII in 1946, Hawk made the Curtiss Racer model injection molded in black tenite. The box was a simple one-color affair. This may have been the first injection molded airplane kit produced in the USA; another contender is the Varney's PT-17. Both met a very cool reception at hobby shops. Hawk quickly changed the Curtiss box to two colors and added box artwork while molding the kit is bright yellow acetate. In 1947, Hawk approached toy stores since hobby shops were giving the kit poor promotion. The toy stores did much better. Spurred on by toy store sales in 1947, Hawk added four classic racers in 1948, all molded in acetate - the Gee Bee, Howard Ike, Laird Solution and the Supermarine S6B. Hawk made the switch to polystyrene in 1949. This kit is the one in polystyrene in about 1950 but is evidently the second box art issue as the first one showed an aircraft in the air and on the water. Like the first issue, this is a one-piece 'flip-top' box. The box is only in fair condition - there is significant wear and clear tape - but the kit inside has never been started and is in mint condition.

Monogram 1950 Austin Drag Coupe, 1/25, 85-7698

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

From 2003. Very nicely detailed kit of this once-popular drag car. In the 1950s and 60s this car was a common occurrence at the American drag strip due to it's light weight. An engine swap produced a very fast car that was a handful to drive. Kit features build-up rolling chassis just like the real car, detailed engine and compartment, forward opening hood, complete race interior, opening doors and more. Molded in white, clear, chrome and with real rubber tires. The kit has never been started. Internal factory sealed bag including decals and instructions.

Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Very high quality Globe kit from the 'Golden Age' of HO Craftsman kits. I have always considered Globe as one of the 'Cadillac' metal kit manufacture for their use of crisply embossed brass or steel and prototype factory paint and markings. This kit is a fine example. Features all steel sides, ends and roof with all parts completely and beautifully painted and marked as required, wooden floor, metal underframe beam and supports, other brass and steel details, metal trucks with real springs and full instructions/plans. The kit has never been started. The small parts are still sealed in the factory bags and the parts that were not sealed have been inventoried complete with the instructions/plans. If you have an interest in these highly accurate HO kits and the revolution they created in modeling, please read the article about their history located on this website.

Athearn One Dome Tank Car - Union Oil 76 - HO Craftsman Kit with Sprung Metal Trucks, 1/87, A505

Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

Includes working sprung metal trucks. Very high quality metal kit from the Golden Age of HO Craftsman kit. Builds a very accurate and highly detailed prototype. Of the Craftsman metal tank car kits, Athearn's are my personal favorites for scale and detail. Almost all the parts that are metal on the actual box car are metal on the model. This kit is factory painted for Union 76 in overall blue with the colorful 76 logo. Features stamped tank top and bottom with fine rivet and panel detail, die-cast tank ends, die cast dome, frame, supports and bolsters, steel center support rail, metal hand rails, brake set, couplers and draft gear cover plates, steps, dump valves, ladders and more. The factory paint is excellent, and still wrapped in the factory protective plastic. NOTE: the bottom tanker shell, ends and dome have all been painted an identical matching blue. There is no other painting or assembly. The kit has been inventoried complete including instructions. NOTE: instructions are a photocopy of the 3 dome model. Joe Ott Grumman F6F Hellcat 'Bild-A-Set' - 38 Inch Wingspan Flying Model, 107

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

Dated 1944. Large 36 inch wingspan issue. The Joe Ott designed 'Bilt-A-Set' series was the height of classic stick and tissue flying model kits- not just for the box art, but also for the contents. The large wingspan kits were the top of the Joe Ott line and had a price tag to match. They were out of reach of most children in the 1940s. Fewer were produced, which makes them harder to find today. In a time when most kits came only with white tissue, printed wood and plans, the Bilt-A-Set line box came chock full of parts and features like Assembly Line jigs for straight fuselage and nacelles, Speedlok Clamps, Die cut plywood or balsa parts sheet, die cut cardstock sheets, colored tissue, color printed national markings, clear window material, fully illustrated instructions and more. This kit has never been started. Parts are still as new, all in the sheets. 100% complete - all sheets, instructions and accessories present.
