Cleveland Douglas DC-3 / C-47 - For R/C or Free Flight, SF-165

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+++

Sold

Giant 1/16 scale kit with a 72 inch wingspan. Ideal kit for electric power and conversion to RC. This model is in the original plain but sturdy cardboard box with 'Cleveland' stamped in ink on it and the name of the kit and kit #. The kit came from a long time collector of 1930s and 1940s models and is in exceptional condition. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and decals (if issued with the kit). The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called 'The Aviation Craze' that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business, called Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviations great Recruiter, Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Jo-Han 1972 Ford Gran Torino Sport 2 Door HT, 1/25

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Amazing condition, true dealer promotional model with the original box. One owner and obtained new in 1972 from a Lexington, KY dealership by a discriminating collector. The model is still wrapped in the original tissue paper It was never used, displayed or played with and the tires reflect that. The chrome, clear and tires are as new. The color and gloss are factory fresh but there is a closed crack on the passenger "A" pillar. I may have never even noticed it, but the original owner wrote it on the box end flap when he got home and examined it more carefully. Complete with all parts. I'll grade it 9 out of 10 with the entire deduction due to the closed crack. The box is 'excellent' and is stamped "1972 GRAN TORINO SPORT GOLD" on the end flap.

Airfix Boeing 314 Pan Am Clipper - 'Dixie' or BOAC 'Berwick', 1/144, 04172

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed NM

Sold

Still factory sealed. Dated 1988. Very finely molded with 76 pieces and well detailed for the time. Has decals for both aircraft. In the 1930s Pan Am was a household word in the USA for their romantic foreign routes and the glamorous 'China Clippers' that crossed the Pacific Ocean, stopping at such ports as Wake Island. Pan Am's attention soon turned to the Atlantic. Since non-stop service would be needed, a new aircraft was designed. The Boeing 314 was chosen. This huge flying boat started flying the Atlantic mail in 1939 with a trip over 26 hours long. Before the war, the 314 fleet flew the Pacific, Atlantic and other routes. The airliner was a palace compared to the cramped jets and limited service of today. The flight deck compared to the bridge of a ship and housed 6 crew. It was connected to the passenger cabin by a spiral staircase. The luxurious cabins were divided into 5 standard compartments, each seating 10 passengers, a dining salon for 14, a special compartment for four and a deluxe bridal suite. 74 could be carried on day trips and 40 when sleeping quarters for all passengers was required. Chefs prepared gourmet meals while passengers lounged in deeply cushioned wicker chairs and enjoyed a grand view of the scenery from about 5,000 feet. The age of the Clippers ended shortly after WWII when land planes could operate at much higher speeds than the flying boats.
