They are actually box scale, but as a general guideline, they usually had a wingspan of 16 inches and have simple and light construction. Sterling Aeronca Champion - 21 Inch Wingspan Flying Aircraft, Peanut, K1

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed NM+

Sold

Still factory sealed. A well engineered, highly prefabricated model featuring all die-cut quality balsa parts, a large number of completely formed parts including fuselage sides, top and bottom, wing sheet covers, tail feathers, etc, finished wheels, plastic cowl & prop, rubber motor, hardware set, clear window material, colored tissue, color decals, full size plan and separate teaching instructions sheet. The Aeronca Champion was a typical trainer manufactured after WW II in anticipation of teaching masses civilian pilots. The aircraft won great attention and high praise. It was a forgiving machine with a top speed of 100 mph and it would cruise at 83 to 90 mph. The fuel capacity was 14 gallons which was good for 270 miles at cruise. Most Champions had enough instruments and equipment for almost any single engine training program.

Sterling Curtiss JN-4 Jenny - 32 inch Wingspan RC Flying Model Airplane, 1/16, E1

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Excellent model with a 32.35 inch wingspan kit for RC, CO2, free flight, control line or non-flying detailed scale build. Features all die-cut balsa and plywood parts, numerous detailed light-weight plastic parts (engine heads, exhaust, cowls and more), rubber motor, plastic prop, formed wire landing gear, clear material for windshields, strip wood, real rubber tires with completely finished hubs, control hardware, hinge material, covering material, beautiful full size plans and a huge, colorful decal sheet. The kit has never been started. The parts that were factory sealed are still in the sealed bags. The parts that were not factory sealed have been inventoried complete including decals and instructions. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be deluxe kits and very complete.

Lindberg Monitor and Merrimac with Diorama Seascape Base, 77257

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed VG

Sold

Still factory sealed but there is a moderate crush at the upper left. Very nice package with both kits and a plastic seascape battle display base. Merrimac measures just shy of 13 inches long and the Monitor measures 8.25 inches long. These are the two American Civil war ships that spelled the end of the wooden ship age. In March of 1862, the Merrimac put to sea to raise the Union Blockade off the James River. There she sank the Cumberland and Congress. The Monitor, the Union's only ironclad and the first turret ship, was rushed to the scene. The epic battle between the two iron-clad ships ended in a draw, with the Merrimac suffering a little more damage than the Monitor. The Merrimac was blown up to avoid capture; the Monitor sank in a gale in 1862.

Micro Models The 1940 Playboy Sr - 38 inch Wingspan Flying Aircraft (ex-Cleveland) - (later Midway Model Company), 2/5, F112

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

This is an authentic reproduction of this classic design and is just over half the original size. It features full size plans, quality printwood parts, spare and strip stock, plywood motor mount, two colors of covering tissue and excellent full size plans. Never started and complete. A great gas model designed to climb fast and high then 'Sniff for Thermals', the honored pastime of a generation of model enthusiasts. Flying model aircraft predated powered flight; however, balsa wood and printwood were not introduced until the early 1930s and the hobby took off, as well as the hunt for thermals. Gas flight began in the early 1930s, and powered models (most all driven by Brown engines) took home so many awards that they were forever separated in competition from rubber powered models. Design of gas models was tricky since RC (radio control) models could not yet be applied to the mass market; so a gas model had to not only fly and climb under power, but then glide sufficiently - all in a stable fashion and without any operator inputs once the airplane took off. Micro Models originally reissued many of the gas free-flight classics. The line was taken over by Midway Model Company around the early 1980s.

Aurora Lockheed F-90 Fighter, 1/48, 33

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

The box is in 'excellent+' condition with as-new color and gloss, four solid corners, no tape or tape marks, no price tags and no tears. The only flaw is very light general wear. Hardbox is dated 1958, but the logo and 98 cent price extension tells us that this is probably and early to mid 1960s issue. Includes the correct triangle two-piece clear display stand as well as full landing gear and rockets. Molded in silver and clear. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. This is reissue of one of Aurora's first two kits (F-90 and F9F) which were copies of the Hawk molds.
