Maircraft Heinkel He-51 - Solid Wood Model Airplane, 1/48, S-9

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$25

Maircraft was originally founded in the early or mid 1930s by Gordon Christoph and went by the name Aircraft Model Company. The company produced a typical line of solid 'profile cut' kits that required the usual high talent levels for carving and finishing. A former Comet Model Airplane & Supply Co. salesman, Jack Mair, bought the company in the early 1940s and renamed it Maircraft. This company was one of the handful of solid kit producers who issued models in a consistent 1/48 scale during the 1930s and 1940s (others included Hawk and Dyna-Model). This lead to one of the most desirable and rare model kits ever produced in the USA - the wood/plastic 1/48 United DC-3 model issued immediately after World War 2. Other than the P-61 and a few other Maircraft offerings, most were simple kits that sold for the low price of about 35 cents and gave the owners many hours of pleasurable work. This kit features a full size plan with instructions steps, fuselage, wings and tail that are 2D profile cut, clear material for the windshield, fully formed wheels and insignia on the plans. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions.

This kit features a full size plan with instructions steps, fuselage that is factory cut to about 70% complete, profile cut wings and tail, fully formed wheels and clear material for the windshield. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions.

Hawk Skycycle Piper PA-8 - Solid Wood Aircraft Model, 1/48, 26

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

$58

A rare kit for the advanced collector or builder. Hawk was one of the few manufacturers making wooden kits to a constant scale of 1/48 in the 1930s. Hawk kits were considered high quality and very complete for the time. This model dates from 1946 but still has the green style wartime box. It features a profile (2D) carved wooden fuselage, wings, rudder and elevator, clear vacuform canopy (in 'near mint' condition), wooden stock as required, fully formed wheels, other cut-to-shape wooden parts, threaded screws to very cleverly duplicate scale engine cylinders, sandpaper, a sheet with wing registration numbers and quality, full-size plans with wing and fuselage templates. The model has not been started and is complete.

Hawk De Havilland DH-4 - Solid Wood Aircraft Model, 1/48, 56

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair+

$39

Rare model from the 1930s for the advanced collector. Note the low kit number (36) in this series. Hawk was one of the few manufacturers making wooden kits to a constant scale of 1/48. However, the company was innovative as it quickly included injection molded accessories. This model features a 3D (three axis) cut fuselage, profile (2D) cut wings and tail feathers, fully formed wooden wheels, metal propeller and 2 machine guns, wooden stock as needed, clear material for the windscreen, full color insignia and high quality, full-size plans. Never started and complete.

Hobby-Time Gloster Meteor 8, 1/56, 282

Deluxe solid scale model kit from the early 1950s. Features 3D cut fuselage, two sheet of die-cut wooden parts (wings, tails, etc), wood stock as required, finished rubber wheels, clear vacuformed canopy and a red plastic display stand. This kit features a full size plan with instructions steps, all hardwood parts (very unusual; normally they were balsa), full color insignia sheet, 3D cut fuselage, profile cut wings and tail feathers, printwood and a small bag of sealed details. The kit has never been started. The parts that were factory sealed are still in the sealed bags. The parts that were not factory sealed have been inventoried complete including insignia and plans/instructions.

Joe Ott Spitfire With Ott-O-Matic Formers - 22 Inch Wingspan Flying Wood Model, 2201

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$64

Rare kit from the 1940s or very late 1930s. Every rarer in this condition - with a complete box and all contents never disturbed other than when I did the inventory. This is very unusual due to the age and their very fragile nature. This model is one of Joe Ott's mid-range line in size and price. It features glue in a metal tube, 2 sheets of the unique Ott-O-Matic formers on thick stock, factory-carved balsa wood propeller, thin hardwood wing ribs, factory-cut stripwood stock, a factory sealed paper envelope for the small parts (usually consists of fully carved thrust button, main wheels and metal prop shaft/rubber motor hook), clear material for windows, color insignia, covering tissue and excellent plans. The kit has never been started. The loose parts have been inventoried complete and the paper envelope is still factory sealed.

Western Aircraft Mfg Co Dragon-Fly Miniature Airplane - 14 Inch Wingspan Prefabricated Flying Model

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$249

Very rare. 1932 early RTF stick-and-tissue model from Western Aircraft Manufacturing Company, Los Angeles California. The box and kit are both in investment-grade 'near mint' condition. I had seen these in 1930s magazines but did not know if any were left. All of the pieces of this aircraft have been factory assembled and simply need to be put together with the supplied rubber bands. The fuselage/rubber stick is cut, finished & painted and has both metal rubber motor clips installed. The wing, vertical and horizontal stabilizers are fully assembled of light-weight wood with the tissue applied. The horizontal stabilizer and wing have the correct airfoil camber built in, and the wing has the USA national insignia applied. There is a perfectly carved wooden propeller, metal rubber hook/propeller shaft, two fully finished wheels, other wood parts cut to size and ready to install. Even the original rubber bands used for installing sub-assembles together are present and still intact on the motor stick. The rubber band motor is present but very brittle and broken into many sections. There is an excellent set of front and back illustrated instructions that cover assembly, how to fly and adjust the aircraft and how to maintain it. Please note, this model must be shipped insured.

California Model Co Nieuport 17C-1 - 19.75 Inch Wingspan Balsa Flying Aircraft - (Ni17 Nieuport 17), 1/16

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$59

Probably from the late 1940s or early 1950s. Higher quality stick-and-tissue flying model to a constant 1/16 scale. Can be built for static scale display or flown with rubber, CO2 or small gas motors for power. Features quality balsa printwood and strip wood, factory-carved balsa propeller (needs final finishing), completely finished wheels and thrust button, hardware, stock wood and metal as required, blocks as needed, covering tissue and beautifully drawn full-size plans. The model has not been started. Inventoried complete with all parts and plans. Made by California Model Company out of Long Beach, CA USA. If you have more information on this manufacture, please email me. How far back they go is unknown; they claim to have the 'Know How of 30 Years Experience' on the box side, but that could be interpreted many ways. From the box there was at least a Spad, SE-5, Fokker DVII, Niuport and a Sopwith Camel for rubber power as well as the 'Spacer A-B' & 'Spacer 1/2A' and the indoor Featherette. We know they also issued some ex-Suydam railroad kits as well. From Bill Baker Jr - "California Model Company originated in Long Beach, Calif in the late 1940's or early 1950's. My grandparents, William (Bill) Loyal Baker and his wife, Ruth (Tripp) Baker were the founders. The company started out as primarily balsa based model aircraft but later, in the late 50's or early 60's, branched into the model RR craft kits and Cub Scout craft kits. They even had a balsa speed boat kit powered by a model airplane gas engine adapted to fit. When they retired, around 1968 or 1969, they sold the business and the "shop" in North Long Beach they built to house their business. I have many fond memories as a young child "working" with them in the shop, assembling kits. I have a few unbuilt kits today!"

Ace Whitman De Havilland Venom Fighter - Balsa Model Airplane Kit, 1/64, 2284

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$32

The 'Ace Whitman' name was used by Joe Ott for some of his marketed kits. This model is a solid display model from 1952 and features an 80% precarved fuselage, die cut parts, full size plans and a stapled bag of detail parts (probably wheels). The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions.

Comet Republic P-47D Thunderbolt - 24 Inch Wingspan Flying Aircraft, 3502

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed VG+

$54

Still factory sealed. 1970s large scale issue for rubber or gas free flight, or easily converted to RC using today's tiny and light servos and receivers. Kit features traditional wood/tissue construction, insignia, detailed full size plans, building instructions, wheels, hardware, tissue and propeller. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Contest Craft So-Lo Class B Stunt Plane - 22 Inch Wingspan Flying Aircraft

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$95

Very rare model from 1949. Highly prefabricated and robust control line model from the "Contest Craft Company." Features high quality balsa parts that are all either factory cut to shape or die-cut, covering material, landing gear wire, full size plans and detailed instructions. This kit has been inventoried complete but NOTE: it has minor and 'professional' quality assembly. The center core of the fuselage (a flat assembly) is built. There is no other assembly. Thanks to Dusty Rhodes, we now know a little bit more about Contest Craft. Mr. Richard W. Backora registered the company name in 1949 and it appears that this model was one of his designs. Mr. Backora was born in New York, NY in 1924. He was a WWII Navy veteran and also served in the US Marine Corps. He was an Armament Equipment Branch Head for the Naval Air Systems Command and retired after 28 years of government service. He then spent 15 years in the private sector as a staff and project engineer with Thiebolt Aircraft, Republic Aviation and Melpar, Inc. Mr. Backora was very active in his local community in Church and secular organizations. He was also a member of the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) and the Lewes R/C Club. Although no address is given for the manufacturer, the instructions state that you should ask your hobby dealer for other Contest Craft Company kits.
