Rogers Motor Company Studebaker M-29 C Weasel - Army Personnel and Cargo Carrier, 1/12, 29C

Multimedia Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

Rare, large 1/12 scale highly pre-fabricated kit from 1945. Very high quality wood and metal scale Weasel measuring 10.5 inches long when assembled. Features pre-cut and precarved hardwood parts for the main body and deck fittings, completely formed bogie wheels, die-cut fibre bogie chassis, numerous other very thick fibre parts, metal screen and metal stock as needed, complete interior, numerous other die cut parts, completely formed tread links, clear windshield, full decals and much more. Rogers spent a significant amount of time on the 'Photo-Plan' instructions, providing photos for each step and detailed text, full size plans and parts list. The kit has never been started. Inventoried as good as possible and appears complete with all parts, decals and full instructions with plans. There are no part numbers and assembly is by the plans; so inventory is very difficult at best. All the major parts are there but a small (easily made) wood part or two may have been overlooked. Rogers was an early producer of miniature gas engines for free-flight and early radio control model kits and often had large adds for these engines in hobby magazines. The full company name on the box is listed as 'Rogers Motor Company Detroit Michigan' and the 'Scale Model Division' is listed as Tawas City, Michigan. Right at the end of WWII, Rogers made a very short journey into kit manufacturing. As you would expect from an engine manufacturer, the kits were all true scale, highly prefabricated, had excellent detail and were fairly complicated. Rogers produced at least four kits - the 40MM AA Gun and Carriage (1/16 scale), Army Weasel, LST and an amazing, huge scale Sherman M4 tank with over 780 parts. These kits were likely produced in that order, with the LST being released around late 1945/early 1946. I have seen several of these kits built and they make excellent displays. And thanks to kit builder and collector Fran Fierko for some new and important kit history! Fran was able to track down the son of the designer of the five Rogers kits. Mr. John Hoenle Jr. was a master model builder who received a deferment from the draft in WWI to build recognition models for the military- some of which may still be on display at Wright-patterson AFB in Ohio. Mr. Hoenle is believed to have designed one other early kit, a civilian Chris Craft cabin cruiser. It is unknown if this kit was issued or not. Mr. Hoenle left Rogers to design promo models for Jo-Han, which is famous for their 1950s line of car kits.

Orange Crush-Revell 1900 Packard Roadmaster, 1/32

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

Very rare kit with a fascinating history. Around 1958/59, Orange Crush of Mexico offered a promotion. They offered free, colorful, plastic model cars if you collected correctly-marked Orange Crush bottle caps. The models are 1/32 scale Revell Highway Pioneer series - although there is no mention of Revell or Lodela anywhere on the box. Orange Crush had the boxes and even the instructions specially made for them with no mention of a manufacturer. They were never given numbers. The boxes were very thin and fragile cardboard. This has contributed to wear and you must be very cautious with them. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bag and the instructions are sealed in the bag as well. You could redeem your caps two ways - at the Orange Crush truck and at a Modelandia Hobby House. The box sides show the 18 cars in the series. Orange Crush also released two full-color booklets and a complete paint set for the cars. A colorful cardboard box held 7 colors of paint in glass bottles, complete with 'Orange Crush' screw-on caps! The entire promotion was done in coordination with Modelandia Hobby House which had up to 19 stores. Modelandia's name appears on each of the boxes and the paint as well. Robina S.A. was the bottler or distributor of Orange Crush in Mexico at that time. The box side lists the other 18 kits with small color pictures of each and shows three sizes of OC - Family Size (Familiar), Grand (Grande) and Normal. You could also obtain models with Titan bottle caps. Titan was also bottled by Robina and came in large (Titan) and smaller (Titancito) sizes and apparently more than one flavor. We do not know how Orange Crush had access to the plastic kits or who sealed the internal bags with the Crush instructions inside them. We can assume that it may have been Lodela, since they would have had access to the Revell molds. It is not know for how long the promotion lasted, but Orange Crush was one of the most dominant soft drinks in Mexico at that time. Here is one clue: some boxes claim that Modelandia had 13 locations; other boxes, which obviously came later on, claim 19 locations. This may indicate that this promotion went on for a significant amount of time.

Pyro Steam Paddle Cutter Harriett Lane American Civil War - Civil War Blockade Runner (Cutter Lavinia), 1/124, 249

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair+

Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions. The hull along measures 16.25 inches long. NOTE: the dolphin striker is neatly broke at the base from the bowsprit. It is present and can be repaired. The instructions say "Civil War Blockade Runner" which is not unusual for this model. The Harriett Lane was built in 1858 and named for President Buchanan's niece. The cutter was 180 feet long with a 30 foot beam and displacement was 670 tons. Armament consisted of 3-9 inch Dahlgrens and 1-30 lb Parrot Rifle. She was built at a time when steam was not fool-proof, so she is rigged for full sails. Harriett Lane served as the Presidential Yacht, the fired the first shot of the Civil War. She chased down blockade runners until January 1, 1863 when she was attacked by five Confederate Gun Boats and boarded. She was captured and renamed the Lavinia and was used as a blockade runner. Near the end of the war she caught fire at sea, and put into Havana Harbor. Federal forces took her again and rebuilt her in 1869 as the bark 'Elliot Ritchie.' She was abandoned at sea in 1884.

After the war, Lindberg and Olsen had a strong hand in early United States injection molded kit development. Please see the article located on this website about early USA plastic kit manufacturers.

UPC stood for Universal Powermaster Corporation which was based out of New York City, NY. UPC did not cut their own molds, but bought kits already molded from other manufacturers and re-boxed the kits in the USA. Scott Eidson, the famous artist best known for his artwork with Revell, also did UPC box art in the 1960s. All UPC production ended in the 1970s. Interestingly enough, this kit says 'Molded in Japan' so these any many other Lindberg molds made their way to Japan at this time.
