Hudson Miniatures 1904 Stevens-Duryea Old Timers, 1/16

Wood and Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Very well detailed, large 1/16 kit from 1954. Features excellent plastic wheels, driving lanterns and leaf springs for all four wheels, black cloth convertible top cut to shape, red and black upholstery material, metal and wood accessories and wooden die-cut and stock material main parts. Although all of Hudson's 1/16 kits have excellent detail, this one has even more detail than usual thanks to Hudson's engineers having access to the actual car. This kit has never been started. The small parts are still in the internally sealed factory bag and the other parts have been been inventoried complete with all parts, plans and instructions. Please note, there are adult notes written on the plans to improve the accuracy of the model. The owner of these kits was a keen researcher and actually won a Hudson Miniature Old Timers Model Building Competition. Hudson Miniatures created a very popular line of automobile kits in a constant 1/16 scale shortly after WWII. The kits sold very well...so well that you could argue that Gowland & Gowland borrowed Hudson's subject matter for their ground-breaking 'Highway Pioneers.' The Hudson Miniatures 'Old Timers' even spawned a line of imitators, with Fador's 'Smallster' being one of the better in quality. Sales did drop on the appearance and popularity of the much smaller (and less accurate) Gowland/Revell 'Highway Pioneers' in 1951. When the all-injection molded Gowland kits proved not to be a passing fad, Hudson quickly planned and released his own all-plastic, small-scale competition called 'Lil' Old Timers Quickie Kits.' The kits were of excellent quality, but it was too little too late. Additionally, sales of the excellent wooden kits faltered further in the next few years with the introduction of accurate, 1/24 and 1/32 all-plastic cars in the mid 1950s. This forced Hudson to discontinue the wood kits and the plastic line was sold to Revell and subsequently re-released. Today, these excellent, big 1/16 kits are often the only model available of these early automobiles. The 1911 Mercer Raceabout is one of the rarest American cars. The Mercer was built in Trenton, NJ and powered by a 30 hp T head 4 cylinder engine. Displacement was 300.7 cubic inches and the car had a wet clutch four speed transmission. The car weighed 2,500 lbs and cost $2600 and could do 112 mph. The Mercer was perhaps the most famous sports car of the time. It was rugged, handled very well and had excellent performance.

Revell Clipper Stag Hound - The Largest Merchant Ship of Her Day, 1/216, H317

The kit has never been started. Inventoried with all plastic parts present. Includes flag sheet and instructions. NOTE: missing decals. Several small deck parts are a different color plastic; they are from the earlier issue of this same kit. The Stag Hound was designed by the famous Donald McKay and was launched on December 7, 1850. She is famous for her great speed and turned a nice profit for her owners. The most notable event was when the Stag Hound was asked to take a copy of President Lincoln's inaugural address to London. During this run, she raced the steamer 'America' and won easily. Shortly after this she was lost off Brazil to a spontaneous combustion of her coal cargo. The crew successfully abandoned ship. The captain was the last to leave. He lowered the American Flag, wrapped it around himself and jumped overboard.

Gowland & Gowland Golden Hind Shipyard Ships in Bottles

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Rare, early, small scale ship kit from 1952. Very nicely detailed and molded for that time and includes a clear plastic 'bottle' for display inside. Features detailed hull, masts, sails, molded sea display base and clear sheet plastic with the delicately printed ratlines. Includes beautiful color instructions with the ship history, illustrations of assembly, how to set the sails and even rigging. The scale is not given, but the sea base measures 6.5"x2" and the ship is approximately 5 inches long. There is no assembly but NOTE: the hull is neatly painted red below the waterline. There is no other painting. Inventoried complete with all parts, bottle, cork and includes instructions. The box sides illustrates and names the 10 kits of this line. All were available in regular or 'Ship In A Bottle' (like this one) versions. The 'Bottle' was also available separately; it was cleverly molded so that the seam was exactly where a bottle seam was normally located back then and a cork stopper was included. The entire set consists of the Santa Maria 1492, Golden Hind 1588, Mayflower 1620, Bon Homme Richard 1779, SS Savannah 1819, The Flying Cloud 1849, Charles W. Morgan 1850, Gertrude L. Thebaud 1929, Frigate Constitution 1797 and US Revenue cutter 1849. It appears that Gowland & Gowland has not received the credit that it deserves in the plastic kit revolution that took America by storm in the early 1950s. Gowland developed the first all plastic car made in the USA in 1950, the 1911 Maxwell. Even more interesting is that Kevin and Jack Gowland developed the 'Highway Pioneers' in 1951 which heralded the future for the American Hobby Industry. The reason that Gowland's name is not in the fore-front of model history is that Precision Specialties (later Revell) did the distribution for Gowland.

Guillows Fairchild 24 - 25 inch Wingspan for Free Flight or R/C Conversion, 701

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

From 1993 and a reissue of the famous 1960s flier. Nicely detailed with scale plastic wheels, plastic propeller, vacuform nose/cowl and engine, full color decals, colored tissue, die cut balsa parts, rubber motor, plywood firewall and excellent full size plans. The model has not been started. The parts are either still in the factory sealed bag or inventoried complete. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.
