Sterling Hal Krier's Great Lakes Special - 24 inch Wingspan, A24

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Scale kit for RC, free flight or control line. Features large, full color decal sheet, high-grade die cut balsa, die cut plywood, vacuform plastic cowl with engine detail, wheel pants and pilot, clear canopy material, carved and painted wood main and tail wheels, finished wire landing gear, rubber motor and plastic prop, carved wooden thrust button, control line handle, firewall, elevator horn platform, metal hardware and pushrod wire, full size plans with instruction details and full instructions for conversion to RC or control line. The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. The small parts are still factory sealed. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I personally considered Sterlings to be 'deluxe' kits.

1970 scale stick and tissue rubber powered flying model. Includes die cut balsa parts, vacuform nose/spinner, wheels, metal landing gear, plastic propeller, hardware, vacuform canopy, colored tissue, rubber motor, insignia and full size plans with detailed building instructions. The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2014.

On July 14, 1953, Hawaiian Pilot collided with SS Jacob Luckenbach (another C-3 freigher, ex-Sea Robin), off San Francisco. Rare. From about 1953. Early Gowland-produced set with no part number. Gowland designed and molded these kits as well as providing the box artwork and instructions - Revell did the marketing. Inside, the kit is correct with all cardboard dividers, tires molded in black and the cars molded in red, black, dark blue, yellow and green, correct instructions and the small parts are in the factory wax paper bags. The models have never been started. All kits have been inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys.
