In February of 1929, the Navy issued Mitsubishi a design requirement for a new, large carrier attack bomber capable of carrying one large torpedo or one ton of bombs. The design was to be a twin-engine biplane powered by two 400 to 500 HP engines. By January of 1930 the Navy froze the specifications and Mitsubishi accepted the offer. The new airplane became the 7-Shi Twin Engine carrier aircraft and ultimately a land plane of the Japanese Navy. The first of these aircraft were completed in September of 1932 and test flights becan on October 19 of 1932. The first four prototypes were identical, but the 5th aircraft up to the total of 11 incorporated changes suggested by the Navy including the use of four-bladed propellers and the single vertical fin replaced by twin fins and rudders. As it turned out, the Navy Type 93 were considered to be unsuitable for aircraft carrier use or for that matter any tactical combat operations. However, they were used almost exclusively for training air crews for large land-based bombers at the Tateyama Kokutai. This kit is the twin vertical fin/rudder variant of aircraft #5 through #11.
