Unknown Berliner-Joyce XFJ-2 - Wooden Aircraft Kit, 1/28, D-9
Unknown Berliner-Joyce XFJ-2 - Wooden Aircraft Kit, 1/28, D-9
Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+,   old
$46

Very rare 1930s large scale solid kit from an unknown kit manufacture. The kit number is D-9. The Berliner-Joyce XFJ-2 was the original XFJ with a cowling, Townend ring and a 500-hp R-1340-92 Wasp engine. Performance was very good, but ground handling was less than optimal. The Navy did reconsider the XFJ but decided on other aircraft instead. The aircraft was flown for a few years for various tests and scrapped. Evidently only one was ever made. The kit has minor assembly - the original owner began to rough out the fuselage in profile. The quality of work is good. There is no other assembly and the kit is complete with all wooden parts, fuselage templates, full size plans (very near 1/32 scale), original corked glass vials for glue and paint, turned wood wheels and bamboo.

NOTE: one main gear door is short shot by 1/4 inch. Frog is considered the father of injection molded model kits. The Lines Brothers opened Frog in 1932, capitalizing on the fever caused by Lindberg's solo transatlantic flight. Almost overnight the western populations became 'Air-Minded', and anything aviation was in high demand. Frog created a quality line of stick and tissue rubber powered aircraft and gliders as well as innovative ready-to-fly rubber powered aircraft that required no assembly. The box even contained a built-in rubber motor winder and fuselage holder. Model airplane flight competitions were popular in Great Britain, and one category was 'Rise Off the Ground', or ROG. By changing this to 'Flies Right Off the Ground', the FROG name was born. In 1936 Frog created a line of injection molded plastic models, the first such kit line in the world (Hawk sold a line of injection molded aircraft models in 1934 but they were factory assembled and painted). Named 'Penguin' after the bird that does not fly, the kits were innovative beyond the means of production. At a time when models were simply built by wingspan, the Penguin line was a constant 1/72 scale. Furthermore, a large 1/72 Short S.30 Empire class flying boat contained a full interior and lights! A line of accessories such as AA guns, tractors, hanger, ambulance, sound locator, searchlights and lighting kits were quickly added to the line. WWII caused a pause in production. After the war the box color changed from silver to green, and Penguin kits were also marketed in the USA. Production ended in 1950. Frog quickly expanded and released the Red, Orange, Black, Green, Gold Token, Spin and Comet series as well as Trail Blazers and several others. It is noteworthy that while most manufactures in the 1940s/50 were making toy-like models, Frog attempted to make very realistic models. For example, 'detailing' kits with excessively large rivets was once very popular. Frog ignored this trend and continued to mold aircraft with fine panel lines and no rivets. As a result, Frog kits can be built into very realistic replicas. Production ended in the late 1970s, but Frog molds are still in use around the world.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good,   old

Very nicely molded and detailed kit for that time with full decals and paint guide for both aircraft. The kit has never been started. Internal factory sealed bag including decals and instructions. The box cover aircraft is from 460/DET 1, a small but doubly-staffed unit that was directly subordinate in mission operations to 7th Air Force headquarters at Tan Son Nhut Air Base. Tan Son Nhut was part of the large combination air base and commercial international airport adjacent to the South Vietnamese capital of Saigon. RB-57E aircraft derived their nickname from their call-sign which was 'Patty Lynn.' There were only four aircraft assigned but each had two rotating air crews. Mission imagery (film) was processed by the 12th Reconnaissance Intelligence Technical Sq, which was also located at the 7th AF HQ complex. Nominally they were assigned to the Huge 460th Tactical Recon Wing, to which the 12th Tactical Recon Sq (RF-4Cs)was also assigned. (Thanks to John Barlow for the history!)
Airfix Blackburn NA-39 Buccaneer Craftmaster, 1/72, 4-89
Airfix Blackburn NA-39 Buccaneer Craftmaster, 1/72, 4-89
Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good,   old
$30

One of the more dramatic Craftmaster boxes. A British carrier launches heavily battle-damaged Buccaneers with enemy ships within visual range. Other Buccaneers are taking heavy and accurate fire from the enemy, while one ship is engulfed in flames. Propeller driven aircraft fall burning from the sky. The Buccaneer was the world's first purpose designed low level 'below the radar' bomber. Low level strike aircraft have a shorter airframe life limit due to the stresses of low level flying, so the Buccaneer was designed to be very strong and even had many sub-assemblies milled from solid metal. Kit features opening unique rotating bomb bay, folding wings and working arresting hook. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Box has damage and is only graded 'good'.

The majority of the parts, including the body, seats, fenders, etc are profile cut. Includes full size plans with assembly illustrations, detailed (for that time) written instructions and two photos of the completed model. NOTE: at one time the passenger 'box' was built. Due to the use of poor glue, it has fallen apart. The pieces are intact and can be easily assembled again. One piece broke and was neatly repaired.
